Will Lil Wayne’s VMA Performance Be One For The Ages?

Young Money captain Lil Wayne famously referred to himself as “The Greatest Rapper Alive” and did so with the unwavering confidence of a world champion many times during his celebrated career. Having relaxed on the phrase a bit since his release from prison late last year, Lil Wayne may be crafting a new self-promoting title as the hardworking New Orleans native is currently on the second leg of his "I Am Still Music" tour, prepping his ninth studio album Tha Carter IV and also doing spot date and features when he can in his spare time.

With all the stage practice and a crowd pleasing MTV Unplugged performance earlier this year, Wayne is clearly able to rock crowds with his vast catalog of hits and still growing popularity. As one of the many famous names set to perform at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, some fans may wonder just how Lil Wayne’s upcoming showing the awards program will stack up against rap performances of the past.

Last year, Kanye West performed an elaborate rendition of “Runaway” alongside Pusha T and a bevy of ballet dancers. Eminem also rocked out at the show, although he didn’t stick around for long to catch the rest of the show. In 2009, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys rocked the stages with “Empire State Of Mind” – marred slightly by uninvited rapper Lil Mama jumping onstage toward the end. In 2008, Lil Wayne duked it out in the live show arena with T.I. and Kanye West with Weezy hopping onstage with Kid Rock as well.

In 2011, Lil Wayne has already dropped four singles from his upcoming Tha Carter IV album slated for an August 29 digital release immediately following the awards show. “6 Foot 7 Foot,” John” featuring Rick Ross, “How To Love” and the Drake-assisted “She Will” are all possibilities for Wayne, with the show taking place just a day ahead of the release date for the album. As one of the rap acts for this year’s show, Lil Wayne won’t have to attempt to outshine many of his rap peers but the question remains: just how will Lil Wayne’s performance go down in history?

Tune in to the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards August 28 live MTV at 9 p.m ET/8 p.m. CT. Please visit http://www.mtv.com/ontv/vma/ for up to date exclusive content for the VMAs.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
