LOS ANGELES — Dennis Hopper, the high-flying Hollywood wild man whose memorable and erratic career included an early turn in "Rebel Without a Cause," an improbable smash with "Easy Rider" and a classic character role in "Blue Velvet," has died. He was 74.

My career has crossed paths with Mr. Hopper's several times. One of my mentor professors at UCLA gave Dennis one of his first acting opportunities on the tv show, Medic. Later, i tracked Dennis down in Canada during his Apocalypse now period to try and see if he would appear at a Tribute to Nicholas Ray, who directed Rebel Without A Cause. Sure enough, he took the stage at UCLAs Royce Hall with a mini six pack of Rolling Rock beer and entertained the audience with stories of what it was like to work with James Dean and Natalie Wood. And last but not least, i worked with him on the movie Colors, which he directed; I was involved with on a creative level at the request of Sean Penn. Dennis was personable and wildly engaging and he will me missed
