Phil Hartnoll needs little introduction to anyone with a passing interest in electronic music. One half of the mighty Orbital, the groundbreaking electronic music pioneers who reformed earlier this year for a string of headline appearances, hes also one of the main collaborators in the collective known as Long Range with Nick Smith, James Day, Ben Burns, Will White (Propellerheads) and Toby May.

Orbital, of course, reformed this year to headline a string of festivals including the Big Chill, Global Gathering, Get Loaded In The Park and Rock Ness. They've also played a slew of arena dates around the UK and beyond, and have been welcomed back to the fray like conquering heroes.

Long Range began shortly after Orbital split up in 2004. The Hartnoll brothers had been sat in the same studio with each other for 15 years, producing a string of award-winning Orbital albums and singles, and wanted to try something new. Paul produced a solo album, while Phil teamed up with Nick Smith for the Long Range project producing a critically acclaimed album named 'Madness & Me'.

Following this album, Long Range has expanded into a fully-fledged band and here release the 'Control Me' EP on Pure Mint - three slabs of intricately worked, varied techno music. The title track fizzes and squelches in all the right places, and features a sleazy male/female vocal interplay on the theme control its either sado-masochistic, anti-authoritarian, or both!

'Tools', meanwhile, boasts glistening shards over a low-end gurgle, a track so intricately worked it could be a long-lost Orbital classic. Finally, 'Flip' is filmic and journeying, like the soundtrack to a French art house film. Its a great package, picking up the baton from where Long Range left off while Phils been busy with Orbital gigs and Nick working on film scores.

To celebrate the release of this EP, Pure Mint are offering an exclusive free download of Long Ranges 'Lie Down' track recorded live at the Green Room. The track originally appeared on Long Ranges acclaimed Madness & Me album. Just go to http://pure-mint.com/download/longrange for the free MP3.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
