Stephen Lopkin : Frantic EP

1. ‘Monkey Tennis’

2. ‘Frantic’

3. ‘Ailsa Craig’

The ‘Frantic EP’ boasts three fantastically off-kilter tracks by promising new producer Stephen Lopkin. Stephen first came to our attention via an inventive demo CD in the post (do you remember those?). A few years later and with an album’s worth of refined innovative and eccentric productions we’re excited about Stephen’s first release. The musical maverick shows his versatility taking in the deep, chaotic and melancholic with equal panache.

1. ‘Monkey Tennis’ – You could buy this for the name alone, but fortunately the track matches the genius of its title. It’s an almost inanely feel-good and decadently deep jesting jaunt full of pleasure.

2. ‘Frantic’ – Abrasive, jilted, bleepy techno that clashes and rasps at a brilliantly deranged pace.

3. ‘Ailsa Craig’ – An electronic lament, tautly melancholic and sombre.

Stephen Lopkin has previously remixed Justin Chodzko’s ‘Delta Sun’ and Corrugated Tunnel’s ‘2nd Thoughts’ both on Urbantorque. The ‘Frantic EP’ is his first solo release.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
