Slumdog Millionaire

Malicious Intent

Best film I've seen in ages.

I'm just a bit confused on a few points about the older brother:

MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD!!

There is a scene where Salim kicks Jamal out of the apartment they are staying in, pointing a gun at him. Latika agrees Jamal should go. Why does Salim kick him out and why does his love interest agree?

BIG MAJOR SPOILER - STOP NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM!!!

Why does Salim hole himself up in the bathroom, covered in money? Why didn't he run with Latika?

Film review: Slumdog Millionaire/By BARNEY McDONALD/Sunday Star Times

Who Wants to be a Millionaire? is the poor person's Mastermind, so it seems fitting it has translated so well into a highly enjoyable film about a young uneducated Indian pauper who wins the top prize.

Mumbai's 'slum dogs' beg the question:Why doesn't India care more for its poor?

I suppose it was inevitable: The Indian stars of Slumdog Millionaire, the wonderful film-adaptation of Vikas Swarup's novel Q and A, are to be sued by a slum-dwellers' ‘activist' who says the title offends the feelings and human rights of millions of India's poorest shanty tenants.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
