Having a big US rapper on your single would be a coup for most UK urban artists. What's even more desirable is getting that rapper to sound involved, rather than just phoning in a verse. Estelle's bagged no lesser arm candy than Kanye West for 'American Boy', the first single from her second album and the two trade sweet, cross-cultural nothings with disarming breeziness.

You follow your second record with an 11-year hiatus. Then, after false starts and long pauses, you set a date for the comeback. And you're calling your third album... Third? If Portishead intended to alienate their fanbase, they haven't succeeded. So far, 1.3 million people have streamed two sketchy tracks on MySpace and fans flocked to see them at All Tomorrow's Parties, which they curated in December. The new album doesn't disappoint.

Frustratingly, Kim Deal is probably most widely known as the bassist in the Pixies and had a hit with her band in 1993's 'Cannonball'. In reality, Deal is probably one of the foremost pop technicians of her generation, a perfectionist who labours over precise shades of sound while never losing sight of the pithy glory of pop.

Had they broken up after New Adventures in Hi-Fi in 1996, the clamour for REM to re-form would have been unbearable by now. Instead, the past decade has seen alterna-rock's warrior-sages decline slowly from stardom to cult concern.

He made his name as a hip hop producer, but Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse, isn't very good at concealing his love of the electric guitar... Now he's putting both feet in the rock camp, overseeing the fifth album by Ohio blues-rock duo the Black Keys. Burton originally approached the band to contribute to an album he was working on with Ike Turner. But though the project was abandoned after Turner's death in December, much of the material had already been earmarked for the Keys' own album. F
