Death By Sexy

Eagles of Death Metal

Sony/BMG

****

Queens of the Stoneage front man Josh Homme threatens to override his day job with Eagles of Death Metal, his quirky side-project with guitarist/vocalist Jesse Hughes. Don't worry about the name - there's no death metal on offer here, just a classic collection of thrilling country-rock rackets. With tracks like I Want You So Hard (Boy's Bad News), Cherry Cola and Poor Doggie, Death By Sexy proves once and for all that Homme is a rock God with a midas touch.

Kill Your Own

Hundred Reasons

V2 Music

***

Hundred Reasons' first album, Ideas Above Our Station, was a master-class in angst-ridden rock. But the British quintet failed to live up to their promise on 2004's bleak Shatterproof Is Not A Challenge, so Kill Your Own is make-or-break time. It kicks off in style with balls-out anthems Broken Hands and Destroy, but falls down on lacklustre ballad The Chance. As fast-paced thrasher Live Fast, Die Ugly proves, Hundred Reasons should stick to rocking out and leave the ballads to Ronan Keating.

All Night Long

The Casanovas

Rubber Records

**

Aussie rockers The Casanovas peddle the same brand of high-energy garage-rock preferred by New Zealand's own The Datsuns and The D4. And just like The Datsuns they're up to their third album. But All Night Long sounds like the trio have run out of ideas, with pedestrian rock cliches about broken hearts (Heart Breaker) and leaving town (Born to Run) to the fore. When they finally find a good tune on Shame On You, they ruin it by bringing horns into the mix. Unfortunately, The Casanovas can only dream of rocking all night long.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
