Ice Cube.....Laugh Now, Cry Later

Ice Cube is not really an LA gangsta. Even when part of America's baddest hip-hop group, NWA, most clued-up people soon cottoned on to the fact O'Shea Jackson was a college student, albeit one with an incredible talent for delivering some of the toughest lyrics in the scene.

Still, we all want Ice Cube to be the ultimate bad boy. So when he returns after six years, there's a universal pause before pressing play: will Ice deliver? Sure enough, he comes out with guns blazing. Dripping with ghostly, synthed basslines, reminiscent of Dr Dre, Ice proclaims he's "from the land of gang bangs" and goes on to pepper his old-school references with obligatory jabs at targets including George Bush and Osama bin Laden.

On this album, Ice ticks all the boxes: snarling basslines, niggas and bitches, grass and pistol shots. He may not be a real gangsta, but here he delivers everything fans would want from hip-hop's most charismatic character.

Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
