The Very Best of Roy Orbison

There is nothing more offensive in the record industry than flawed compilation albums.....

At least Virgin's Richard Branson, years ago, when trying to retrieve some of the money he had lost on the easily forgettable group the Motors, had the good humour to call their compilation album The Motors' Greatest Hit.

But for Sony BMG to have the gall to call a 24-track compilation of Roy Orbison the "very best" when it doesn't include Leah, Candy Man and Workin' for the Man and includes questionable, late-period minor hits such as I Drove All Night and a re-recorded 1987 version of In Dreams is to dance with the devil of bad taste.

If you want a compilation of Orbison that has some notable omissions, some oddities and includes the hits he had while involved with Jeff Lynne and the Traveling Wilburys, then this is for you.

The reason for this abomination? Orbison would have been 70 this year if he hadn't died in 1988. What a birthday present!

To celebrate Roy Orbison's life and work, get the DVD of the HBO special, "Black & White Night", aired just before his sudden death in 1988. Orbison was still on top of his game as a performer, and was backed by many, many stars, such as Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, etc. It was one smokin' show.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
