Hawaii Just Became the 26th State to Decriminalize Marijuana

Hawaii just became the 26th state to decriminalize or legalize marijuana, going with the former option.

The new law diminishes jail time for possession of up to three grams of marijuana. However, there’s still a fine of $130 attached to the citation. This initiative helps to ensure minor drug offenders aren’t put behind bars — it’s more like a slap on the wrist.

Hawaii’s legislature approved the bill and sent it along to Democratic Gov. David Ige back in May of this year. Apparently Ige didn’t ever sign the document, but he didn’t veto it either, allowing it to become law.

On January 11, 2020 the law will take effect.

Advocacy group Marijuana Policy Project released a statement on the decriminalization:

Unfortunately, three grams would be the smallest amount of any state that has decriminalized (or legalized) simple possession of marijuana. Still, removing criminal penalties and possible jail time for possession of a small amount of cannabis is an improvement.

While legalization may not be in Hawaii’s immediate future, many marijuana supporters see this as a step in the right direction.

Though the post is from a few years ago, it's intriguing to read about Hawaii's move to decriminalize marijuana. Back then, becoming the 26th state to take such action was noteworthy. Reducing jail time for small possession amounts and replacing it with fines reflects a more lenient approach towards minor drug offenses. While the amount may have been smaller compared to other states, it was still a positive shift. For anyone interested in exploring further cannabis-related developments, there's a lot of information available at releaf.co.uk. It's fascinating to see how attitudes and policies regarding marijuana have evolved over time.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
