Kevin spacey.....Beyond the Sea

Kevin Spacey's biopic of Bobby Darin is long on ambition but short on depth.......

Beyond the Sea is a biopic about Bobby Darin, the Bronx crooner, with Kevin Spacey as both actor and director. Yes, that was my reaction, too - why bother? Darin was a decent singer, but nothing like as good as Sinatra. He made a few good movies in the 1960s (again, not as good as Sinatra's). He married Sandra Dee when she was still a teenager and he was in his mid-20s. They divorced seven years later, as his career began to fade with the rise of rock'n'roll. He died in 1973, at the age of 37, his heart weakened by rheumatic fever he suffered as a child. That's about it, really.

A script about his life has been kicking around Hollywood since at least 1987, when Bruce Willis was set to play him, in a movie to be directed by Barry Levinson. Then came rumours of Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp and even Tom Cruise in the role. The project is said to have gone through six top writers and 20 producers until it reached Spacey, who probably should have been offered it at the beginning. For a start, he has had a lifelong obsession with the singer (again I ask, why?). Second, Spacey is a terrific singer and he sounds very like Darin. And third, 17 years ago, he was the right age to play Darin in his salad days. The only problem is that Spacey wasn't famous enough then to be offered the part. Only he knew he was born to play it.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
