Sex Pistol Gets Hollywood Treatment At Film Fest

Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones has been hosting Jonesy's Jukebox on the Los Angeles radio station Indie 103.1 for two and a half years now, during which time he's become a much-loved local hero. So when the L.A. Film Festival screened Julien Temple's Pistols rockumentary The Filth & The Fury on Saturday, July 1, it seemed only right that he broadcast a special Jonesy's episode live from the venue.

Setting up shop in a cabana at the Hollywood Hills' open-air John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, the punk legend-turned-DJ conducted his show before a throng of delighted fans and lookie-loos, many of whom clutched Pistols memorabilia that Jones graciously signed during commercial breaks. During his on-air segments, Jones interviewed local bands the Vacation (with whom he also jammed on an acoustic performance of the Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting For The Man"), the Like, and classical group the Section Quartet; chatted with Charlatans U.K. singer and fellow L.A. transplant Tim Burgess; and repeatedly bemoaned England's Saturday World Cup defeat.

After Jones's two-hour broadcast, girl-pop trio the Like appeared on the Ford stage, performing a short set that included the surprisingly sultry Sex Pistols covers "Submission" and "Seventeen"; their appearance was followed by an all-strings instrumental rendition of "God Save The Queen" by the Section Quartet, who received a standing ovation. Jones then kicked an autographed soccer ball into the audience as a way of kicking off his movie screening under the stars, after which greasy garage-rockers the Vacation ended the night with a fierce and unhinged performance of the Pistols classics "Holidays In The Sun," "Pretty Vacant," and "EMI."

"I try to cater to music lovers and not just music fodder," Jones told the crowd when discussing his irreverent, freeform Indie 103.1 show. And there's no doubt that the many music lovers at the L.A. Film Festival this evening left the theater completely thrilled with Jonesy's job well done.
