Infoanarchy.org is dead

The news page is dead and only the wiki stays. One of the first, good p2p sites is gone.

This was posted yesterday:

"In case we still have some readers left:

infoAnarchy.org was launched in August 2000 as an alternative news source about file sharing and copyright issues. My goal was to create a site that does not only look at the issues from the point of view of "getting free stuff", but also tries to address the underlying philosophical, political and economic questions; a place where intelligent discussions on these topics can thrive. I've personally posted almost 500 stories, and others have submitted hundreds more.

But under this definition, infoAnarchy is long dead. Sure, there may be a couple of news stories a month that make it worth putting the RSS feed into your aggregator (when it works), but there are other places which provide intelligent commentary on copyright (e.g. Copyfight) or news about file sharing (e.g. Slyck.com). Few people dare to hold a strict anti-copyright philosophy as this site does, but I don't think that is enough to justify its continued existence.

To make matters worse, our software is outdated and heavily customized. Spammers have added hundred of spam comments to old and new stories, and there's no easy way to clean them up. I don't like to see infoAnarchy being used as a relay for search engine spam, so I'd rather close down the site.

But wait a minute - we still have the wiki which actually has an active community and quite a lot of useful content. So here's my proposal:

infoAnarchy.org, the weblog, will be discontinued.

I will try to extract and salvage as much of the old story content as possible for archiving purposes.

The wiki will reside at infoanarchy.org.

For the wiki, I would install the latest patches and anti-spam tools. I would also try to copy the old story content over to the wiki. I think there's definitely room for a decent public domain knowledge base that takes a clear anticopyright stance.

Using a wiki doesn't mean we can't have news content anymore, as Wikinews demonstrates. But the focus will probably be on building a knowledge base.

So, if you have any comments or objections, speak up now. Otherwise this process may begin within the next few weeks."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
