beastieboys.jpgThey were the first white rappers to hit it big, and they blazed musical trails on the Web and DVD. So leave it to the Beastie Boys to take the concert film in a radical direction by letting fans call the shots.

For "Awesome; I F*****' Shot That!," which previews for one night in the United States on Thursday in digitally equipped cinemas, the New York band gave 50 video cameras to fans at a 2004 Madison Square Garden concert who shot the show from their points of view. This could be pretty cool. As long as there were a few people more interested in filming the young tarts gyrating to the music.

They got the cams, gave them to the audience to film whatever they wanted, gave them back to the Boys and they kept the best parts,

"What'd you do with the Hi8s when you were done filming?

We put them back in their boxes and returned them for a refund. This is low-budget filmmaking, after all. Plus, what the hell am I going to do with that many camcorders?"

Fresh Air from WHYY, March 29, 2006 · To film the Beastie Boys' new concert movie, Awesome; I F*****' Shot That!, fans at a concert at Madison Square Garden received 50 cameras.

Awesome, described as "an authorized bootleg," includes more than a thousand edits, as footage was spliced together to give an omniscient view of a Beastie Boys concert. The Hi-8 cameras capture the scene as the rappers tear through a 24-song set.

Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
