Sony BMG Music Canada began a mail-in exchange program Wednesday for music CDs sold that contained spyware. Facing heat for exposing consumers to computer hackers, Toronto-based Sony BMG Music Canada said Canadians that bought one of 34 titles with XCP content protection software will receive replacement CDs without the offending spyware that secretly installs onto computers when discs are played. Canadian consumers also will receive MP3 files of the titles as part of the recall and exchange program. About 120,000 CDs sold by Sony BMG Music Canada contain the XCP software, and no DVD or dual disc product does, according to the music label. The XCP software, developed by First4Internet, was designed to thwart illegal downloading of music product.
