AVI File will not open

I have this movie on my computer that will not open, its a 658 meg file and it says AVI file," The Thing(1951)AVI." I tried WMP. quick time. divx player, video lan. Windows media player classic, If i knew how to find out what format it was in, i could handle it, but im at a loss.. can anyone HELP me. is there a program that reconizes file types?? I will be forever grateful. thanks

Ok. Gspot just told me it wasnt a valid AVI file, Thats all it showed. I tried to render the file in Gspot as it suggested, but rendering failed is was what came up.,,,, Hey? thanks alot Wolfie for your input and thangs for Gspot, I'll keep this program... the quest continues

have you got the divx 6 codec installed?...try that..try dragging the file on to Divx Converter (comes with Divx Create bundle)...see if it will convert it......also an app called the River Past Video Cleaner is very good..it will convert practically any file format......it`s shareware but the pro version can be obtained quite easily elsewhere on the `net..... :)

Hey thanks. i deleted the file but i did download River past video cleaner for future use,, thanks for the tip and the help.......
