Peter Cook was told six months ago he had a year to live. Either from fear or conviction, he rubbishes the diagnosis.

"There are a whole raft of people who seem to die by appointment," the West Australian Labor senator and former Hawke/Keating minister and ACTU vice-president, now 61, said two days ago. "Doctors tell them they've got X amount of time, and no matter how well they might be doing, they die at the appointed time. Well, bugger that. I went out and bought myself a yacht and I'm entering it in a race around the time I'm supposed to die. And on that day I'll be off. I won't cop this shit of death by appointment."........

"My surgeon told me I should walk on [Perth's] Cottesloe beach, admire the sunset, drink a good red wine, and enjoy my wife, which I took as a doctorial euphemism for f---ing.

this is an elected official talking? COOL! :)

He referred me off to an oncologist who repeated the advice and told me I had a year to live. And that's what caused me to think, 'Well, bugger that'.

i wish him the best of luck and hope his committee comes up w/something he and other cancer patients can use to extend their lives/quality of life.

      You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention. 
      But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
