  1. Smith retires as NFL career rushing leader - - - - - - - - - - - - By Dave Goldberg Feb. 3, 2005 | Jacksonville, Fla. -- NFL career rushing leader Emmitt Smith retired Thursday, calling his 15-year career "a tremendous ride." Smith, who starred for the Dallas Cowboys for 13 seasons and spent the last two years with Arizona, made the announcement at the Super Bowl -- a fitting spot for a three-time champion. http://www.salon.com/ent/wire/2005/02/03/smith/index.html
  2. With some of the decade's most engaging production and remix work under his belt-- not to mention two epochal singles-- The DFA's James Murphy unveils his full-length debut with LCD Soundsystem, on which he schizophrenically jumps from genre to genre, invoking everyone from Suicide and The Fall to The Beatles and Brian Eno along the way. Also included is a bonus disc which, at long last, compiles the A- and B-sides of all LCD Soundsystem's previous singles, including the crucial "Losing My Edge" and "Yeah". 4. When the Sous-Chef Is an Inkjet By DAVID BERNSTEIN February 3, 2005 CHICAGO HOMARO CANTU'S maki look a lot like the sushi rolls served at other upscale restaurants: pristine, coin-size disks stuffed with lumps of fresh crab and rice and wrapped in shiny nori. They also taste like sushi, deliciously fishy and seaweedy. But the sushi made by Mr. Cantu, the 28-year-old executive chef at Moto in Chicago, often contains no fish. It is prepared on a Canon i560 inkjet printer rather than a cutting board. Read more here: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/03/technolo...its/03chef.html

  8. Blistering.com: The record label to combat all of the Internet downloading is heavily guarding the new album. What is your stance on this? K.K. Downing: "Not really, but the release date is always the release date. I know for a fact when I was a fan, I would get the buildup and it was great to hit the record store and run home with the vinyl and just have a blast. As far as we are concerned, we want to release the record, hit the road, and have it all be exciting. Not to have the energy and excitement diffused, its all the better really. As a person, I don't know too much about downloading, but I know the fans want to go to the record shop and get the article, the one the band wanted you to have in your hands. I can't say that I'm really that bothered if people get the thing for free over the Internet." http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermo...ewsitemID=32267

  13. STATE OF THE ART Pay Radio Becomes Personal By DAVID POGUE February 3, 2005 The First Rule of Techno-Pop: Any popular, free medium will eventually be ruined by ads, repetition and lowest-common-denominator junk. It happened to network TV, it happened to the Web and it certainly happened to radio. The Second Rule: Any free medium that has been ruined by ads will eventually encounter competition from a not-free alternative. It happened with cable TV and, more recently, satellite radio. It may blow your mind to think that over four million people are now paying $10 or $13 a month just to listen to the radio. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/03/technolo...html?oref=login
