  1. VIBE: Mar/28/2005 MTV’s pop revolution has turned music into an afterthought By Jim Farber | Knight Ridder More than two decades have passed since MTV ushered in a new era of glitz, hype and art by kicking off with that Buggles song, a tune that foretold the murder of music as we knew it at the hands of the new video god. ... “There’s a complaint you hear all the time from managers and labels that MTV just doesn’t play music anymore,” says one well-connected industry observer who didn’t want to be identified for fear of riling the network. “Everyone wonders how it got to thi http://www.southend.wayne.edu/modules/news...hp?storyid=1191
  2. Bee killer imperils crops A tiny parasite, colloquially known as a 'vampire mite,' is devastating honeybees. That worries experts because honeybee-pollinated crops are valued at more than $15 billion a year. By Susan Salisbury, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Monday, March 28, 2005 • The varroa mite has killed or severely weakened an estimated 40 percent to 60 percent of honeybees in the United States during the past six months. • Millions of acres of U.S. fruit, nut, vegetable, seed and legume crops depend on insect pollination. An estimated 80 percent of insect crop pollination is accomplished by honeybees. • Crops that require bees for pollination include apples, avocados, blueberries, cherries, cranberries, oranges, grapefruit, sunflowers, tangerines and watermelon. In addition, the production of most beef and dairy products depends on alfalfa, clover and other plants that require pollination. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/localnews/con...ybees_0328.html

  7. March 26, 2005 -- ALBANY — The well-paid civil servant who spent the last three years reading books and twiddling her thumbs on the state's dime has landed a new post — as part of a settlement of a federal court lawsuit claiming religious discrimination. Patricia Freund, of upstate Salem, an $82,789-a- year manager with the State Liquor Authority, will become a program manager with the Department of Motor Vehicles under terms of a just-announced court settlement. Freund, who said she was punished for raising questions about Gov. Pataki's annual prayer breakfast, will also get $33,000 to cover legal and other expenses. http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/43189.htm
  8. U.S. broadcasters brace for siege By Stephen Labaton The NeBy Stephen Labaton The New York Times Tuesday, March 29, 2005 WASHINGTON The U.S. television and radio industries are about to come under renewed attack over sex, violence and profanity in their programming, both in Congress and at the Federal Communications Commission. . Leading lawmakers and the commission's new chairman have proposed a broad expansion of indecency rules, which were significantly toughened just last year. They are also looking for significant increases in the size of fines and new procedures that could jeopardize the licenses of stations that repeatedly violate the rules. http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/03/28/business/decency.html

  11. This is what concerns me, too, and we do need to do something about it and sooner than later. The bottom line - the corporate mentality where the allmighty buck rules - is what is ruining a lot of industries across the board including the fishing industry and its killing the little guys who know what they are doing and really care.

  14. In terms of the seals, my response was mostly emotional and stems from seeing the photographs of guys clubbing baby seals to death many years ago--perhaps that was an abberation and the seals are hunted now in a more humane way? My main point was that there needs to be a balance between nature and industry to sustain both. Isn't the plight of the fishing industry due to over fishing? Ive read about the huge Japanese nets and how they sweep the oceans, and how corporations and their fleets are pushing out the small guys. In all honesty, Hunter and Shawn are much closer to what's going on...so I'm reading their posts closely to get another (and perhaps more accurate) point of view.
  15. Why should industry take precedence over nature? Balance is what is called for, and there wouldnt be any if you left it up to industry... Last but not least, the hunting procedures are disgusting - surely there must be a better way to treat these animals

  18. Congrats, SG. A3 are definitely a hot band and deserve the recognition theyve worked so hard to achieve. As for the Stones, I've remained a fan - pretty impressive for them to keep going after all these years... And Im glad that finally your dad's life long dream of them playing at Wembley has been fulfilled
