  5. This is kind of an interesting business development, but I think they are smart if they mirror what Amoeba does in the states: "From big chains such as Music Zone, which collapsed in January, to tiny independents such as Covert, in Brighton, which closed its doors last month, record shops are failing across the country. Sales of CDs have dropped by 11% over the past year, as both legal and illegal downloading continue to grow. HMV, Britain’s biggest music retailer, has issued two profits warnings in the past year, and even Tesco, with the second biggest share of the music market, has admitted that it doesn’t make money on the CDs it sells. But the Rough Trade team is confident the store will succeed. Rough Trade’s store director, Stephen Godfroy, believes that the market is increasingly polarised between supermarkets and music specialists, with high-street record shops losing money by being stuck in the middle. He hopes the new Rough Trade shop will attract richer or more committed music-lovers who treat record shopping as a pastime, enjoy owning albums as artefacts and are willing to pay more than supermarket prices for hard-to-find records sold by knowledgeable staff." 6. The Stars is a Montreal indie pop band formed by vocalist Torquil Campbell and keyboardist Chris Seligman, and solidified with the additions of singer-guitarist Amy Millan, bassist Evan Cranley on Heart and drummer Pat McGee. Wikipedia describes their music as "beautiful, eloquent indie pop", characterized by lush instrumentation, nimble production and mixing, narrative lyrics, and soft but nuanced vocals - which is an apt description. Currently, the song 'The Night Starts Here', off of their new cd 'In Our Bedroom After the War', is the most listened to cut at El.bows, but the tech-oriented 'Sleep Tonight, Jr' and 'The Golden Chain' are what caught me years. Of course, anything that has Amy Millan on it, and I'm easily hooked. You can listen to the music right HERE. Ok...you're disappointed they're only streaming cuts, and they are at MySpace!!! Well, just for dropping by and checking in, you can find about 8 more cuts to download over at Vague Space in celebration of the 4th. :) Enjoy.

  10. David Kamp of Vanity Fair tracks down the reclusive funk musician, Sly Stone's for his first interview in 25 years. We learn that Sly is "cleaning up his act, re-uniting with his family and band, and working on a headful of fresh songs"--200 or so! A tip of the hat to Stereogum for the find. "Iin his prime, Stone was a fantastic musician, performer, bandleader, producer, and songwriter. Even today, his life-affirming hits from the late 60s and early 70s—among them "Stand!," "Everyday People," and "Family Affair"—continue to thrive on the radio, magically adaptable to any number of programming formats: pop, rock, soul, funk, lite. He was a black man and emphatically so, with the most luxuriant Afro and riveted leather jumpsuits known to Christendom, but he was also a pan-culturalist who moved easily among all races and knew no genre boundaries. There was probably no more Woodstockian moment at Woodstock than when he and the Family Stone, his multi-racial, four-man, two-woman band, took control of the festival in the wee hours of August 17, 1969, getting upwards of 400,000 people pulsing in unison to an extended version of "I Want to Take You Higher." For one early morning, at least, the idea of "getting higher" wasn't an empty pop-culture construct or a stoner joke, but a matter of transcendence. This man had power." Read More

  13. Valerie Plames husband, Ambassador Wilson & Prosecutor Fitzpatrick respond Patrick Fitzgerald: We fully recognize that the Constitution provides that commutation decisions are a matter of presidential prerogative and we do not comment on the exercise of that prerogative. We comment only on the statement in which the President termed the sentence imposed by the judge as “excessive.” The sentence in this case was imposed pursuant to the laws governing sentencings which occur every day throughout this country. In this case, an experienced federal judge considered extensive argument from the parties and then imposed a sentence consistent with the applicable laws. It is fundamental to the rule of law that all citizens stand before the bar of justice as equals. That principle guided the judge during both the trial and the sentencing. Although the President’s decision eliminates Mr. Libby’s sentence of imprisonment, Mr. Libby remains convicted by a jury of serious felonies, and we will continue to seek to preserve those convictions through the appeals process.
  14. Canada's National Post takes a look at Google's new play: Search engine giant Google Inc. has been putting together a massive cable network to provide customers around the world with telecommunications services ranging from broadband Internet to home and mobile phones. Google has publicly denied plans to get into the lucrative business, valued at US$1.3-trillion globally, but industry experts say it is inevitable. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company already has its toes in it with offerings such as Google Talk and the hugely popular YouTube video service. A major splash is only a matter of time, and when Google -- with its mammoth US$163-billion market capitalization -- does dive in, phone company takeovers and Apple gizmos will look like quaint curiosities. "It's not an if, it's a when," says California-based technology analyst Rob Enderle. Read More
