2. Digital Society Interview Dan Stone ahead of his set at DS Winter Edition @ O2 Academy Leeds, Friday 3rd December 2010 Hi mate, how’s it going? – Where does DS find you today? All good thanks, today I’m sitting at my desk in my daytime job just like many others. 2010 has been a great year for you on tour. What have been highlights - any special gigs or events that have really stood out? Well a few weeks ago I had one of my best gigs, it was in Gdansk, Poland for a night called ‘Trance Around The World’ and not only did I have the honour of playing alongside Nitrous Oxide, Cressida, Anhken and Dennis Shepard but I also got the privilege of going on after Above & Beyond, it was quite an experience and an amazing crowd! On the production front - any news on forthcoming material? Which tracks out there are really doing the damage on the dance floor right now? Its been another manic year on the production front, which I certainly can’t complain about. I’ve got a new EP coming out in December on Anjunabeats, ‘Harvest Moon’ and a brand new 2010 remake of my first release on the label, ‘Made In Bahrain’ so really looking forward to that. I have also got remixes coming out on Armada, Infrasonic and Harmonic Breeze too. As for tracks doing it for me, well, I’m loving the productions by Suncatcher and Ferry Tayle on the uplifting front and they are both on fire this year! but I’m also loving the more prog sound too, producers like Tom Fall and Protoculture have great futures ahead of them. Podcasting & Radioshows have become an important part of an artists visibility in the modern era – tell us about what you have got going on? My monthly ‘Digital Obsession’ show has been going since March now, so it’s still quite new but the reactions I’ve been getting have been great, so I hope that grows next year. It’s also available on itunes now too (cheeky plug!!) Finally, any words of wisedom for the masses as we approach The Digital Society Winter Edition? Just basically stick at it and be patient.....it will come. Thanks again, looking forward to a superb night! Thank you and can’t wait to return up north, what a crowd!! On the production front, Will has had success on many of the leading labels and his tracks and remixes regularly feature in the sets of the world's leading DJ's, and now releases his own work exclusively on his own label, Enhanced. Of his most recent releases 'Tears In The Rain' was a worldwide smash at the start of 2009, and 'Things That Happen', released later in 2009 found major support with the likes of Armin van Buuren. This year's "Arctic Kiss", with Motionchild and Tiff Lacey also saw massive support from all the A-List as Will once again proved he comes up with the goods on every release he puts a new release out. 01. At age 15 in 1986, he began as a hip-hop and scratch DJ before discovering and falling in love with the house music scene between 1992 and 1994. Max was also instrumental in the creation of the famous Atomic club in Ottawa, and his weekly 6 hour sets at Atomic are the stuff of legend among fans. Max exploded onto the producing scene with the releases of “Airtight” and “Tell You,” both of which became international hits. Airtight was nominated for a Juno Award in 2001. This success got some attention from the world dance music scene and Graham was asked to mix Tranceport CD #4, which was also met with huge success, and spurred a world tour in 2001. This rapid rise in attention led Graham to be voted into spot number 23 on DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs list, the highest entry for a newcomer in 2001. His distinctive style remains difficult to pin down, covering genres like house, progressive, techno, disco, and trance to name just some. During a Graham performance, a collection of different sounds can be heard in every aspect of the tracks being played: the bass, rhythms, and melodies constantly change and energize the audience and dancers at Graham’s sets. 01. In 1991 he started his career as a DJ. He was learning to mix on vinyl decks (later on CD players) under the direction of professional DJs. After 4 years of practice he DJs solo and started to produce his own music. His first projects were called Exhibit, Sonic Empire and FM FACTORY, which rised in 1997 and was devoted to commercial genre of music. The first album of this project, called The Album, arose in 2001. It included debut tracks like 17 story, Get up, Give you more, Mrazik 2001, Malo je malo. Year 2003 brought fresh wind to Ronnys production. He started to produce club/house together with his friend and they formed a project called Weekend Project, which was oriented on this genre. In years 2004 and 2005 he added new genres to his production: eurotrance, trance and uplifting trance. Meanwhile he cooperates with interactive TV channel and radio Fun1, for which he creates music graphics, jingels and signatures. 2010 started for him with a great release of his official ah.fm anthem “Morning Light“ which was supported by Armin Van Buuren in asot 435. People voted for this track as the Future Favorite and then Armada Music released this track on their compilation called “A State Of Trance Radio Top 15 (February 2010)“. As the next “The Emotion EP“ (contains 2 tracks: Ronny K. Vs Ziki – From Somewhere and Emotia – Sequile) which was choosen by Jorn Van Denyhoven. He was playing Emotia – Sequile on ASOT450 live in Wroclaw for huge crowds (approx. 9500 ppl). Armin used his production again and the track “From Somewhere“ sounded on ASOT 453. 01. The Digital Society Podcast 042 with Bjorn Akesson Bjorn Akesson Björn Åkesson was born in 1986, in a town called Lund (southern Sweden). He first noticed electronic music in the middle of the 90′s when he heard music from a videogame called Wipeout 2097. With artists such as Future Sound of London, The Prodigy and Orbital the interest grew. A few years later a friend from school introduced Björn to trance/club music. This sounded a lot better and much more interesting than the techno he had heard before. In early 2003 Björn teamed up with a fellow swedish producer for a collab. The track was called Havannah – Havannah’. Havannah was played by top DJ’s like Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Johan Gielen, The Thrillseekers and many others. After this collaboration Björn continued making his own tunes and few years later he luanched the “Akesson” project which made a big impact on Above & Beyonds radioshow ‘Trance Around The World’.In early 2008 the track ‘Perfect Blue’ was introduced to the world as ‘Tune Of The Week’ by Armin van Buuren on his huge radioshow ‘A State Of Trance’. Both Sunchaser and Perfect Blue was very well recieved by the trance community and appeared on several big compilations mixed by world class DJ’s and released by huge recordcompanies such as Sony BGM, EMI and Ministry Of Sound. This is surely the beginning of a very successful music career for the talented young man.Today you can find Björn on his way out to the clubs all over Europe making his epic DJ appearances. 11. Garuda & Digital Society Interview Gareth Emery ahead of his Performance at The Northern Lights Concert @ O2 Academy Leeds, Friday 8th October Tickets Available from these outlets: http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/user/?region=gb_northeast&query=detail&event=400888 http://www.skiddle.com/events/11385369/ The Northern Lights Concert is the first concert themed event from you, can you tell us what we can expect and what the differences will be to a usual Garuda event at Sankeys? The main difference is in the production. Part of the reason why we wanted to do this event at the O2 was because it’s such a big room, which means we can bring in a shit load of additional production and put on something proper special. Sankeys is a great club venue, and doing shows there we’d always spend extra bringing in lasers and VJs, but that was about the limit. With the O2 we can expand to custom LED screens, CO2 cannons and other exciting stuff. Also, as it’s more of an arena, it’s better suited for live singers and performers on stage, plus it’s also that big bigger. Some of our big events at Sankeys maybe got a bit too hectic when the club was completely sold out… but with the O2 we know however busy it is, it’s still going to be comfortable. Are there plans for Northern Lights Concerts to be held in other countries? Er, I don’t know really. If this one is a success then maybe. It’s by far the biggest and boldest thing we’ve done on the events side, but assuming it all runs smoothly and we don’t fuck it up, we may take it elsewhere. We’ve had a few promoters from overseas asking if they can host one but I want to make sure the first one works out before thinking about that. What inspired the name Northern Lights? It’s sort of a tribute to the North of the UK, specifically Manchester where I moved to a couple of years ago, because that definitely was a turning point in my career. The biggest change was getting a proper studio and office rather than working at home – then quite soon after that we founded the Garuda label and club nights, and of course it was in my Manchester studio where I wrote and produced the album. I used to think of the North as grim but it’s been pretty good to me the last few years and I love living there. With your debut album released and hitting the #1 spots in both the US & Canadian iTunes Dance charts - what can we expect from Gareth Emery in 2011 and beyond? There’s a new Sound of Garuda mix compilation due at some point in the not-too-distant future and we’re also doing a Northern Lights remix album which will be out in 2011. And of course I’m already thinking about another artist album, but I plan in taking it a bit easier, so that won’t be surfacing until at least 2012. Sum up the production process of NL in three words... Fucking hard work. What track on the album is your favourite and why? Probably Sanctuary – but that was always going to be the case as it was the first single and has done really well already, so there’s no worries about people not liking it. Other than that, I’d say Arrival is quite special for me, as it’s a cool, housey track but still goes off. Gareth Emery Northern Lights album Out NOW! Click to Purchase Arrival features Brute Force (an Indian duo). Can you throw some light on this crossover collaboration? This was a long process. I first heard the flute that features in the track about two years ago when I was touring India and met Tuhin (one half of Brute Force) and immediatley loved it, and wanted to do something with it. The Brute Force guys loved the idea and sent me the flute, but I didn’t get a chance to look at it for probably another year and a half and I’m sure there were times when they thought it would never happen. The actual track itself started in April, the night before I was playing Armin’s ASOT450 celebration in Bratislava. I really wanted something new to kick off with, and ended up staying up all night to write an intro track, which essentially was a very basic version of Arrival, done in about three hours. It worked great as an intro but lacked something organic for me… so on the plane on the way back I was wondering how to introduce a bit of texture to make the track a bit less synthy, when I suddenly remembered the flute. Of course, the tracks were in different keys, but I was able to re-pitch the Arrival demo and play the flute over the top, and it was clear the two were a good match. So the next week I headed back into the studio, changed the key of Arrival, added the flute and a bunch of other stuff, and it was done. Track of the album for a lot of people it seems. In the economic climate of today, what are the toughest challenges in running your ‘Garuda’ label and club night? The label is challenging and doesn’t make a lot of money, but that’s more down to the fact that most people download the music rather than buy it rather than the economic climate. We also spend money on good remixes and nice artwork, so all in all it’s good that I don’t rely on the label for a living. The club nights do a lot better, but we’re really about making sure people come and have an amazing time, so we spend a lot of extra cash on visuals, production, lasers etc that we could do without, but it makes a big difference. The nights have done great, but that’s partly because we only do 5-6 of them a year so can make each and every one fairly unique. Doing it every week would be more difficult. Who is your next tip for big breakthrough act? Ben Gold. He’s making some great music and is a really good DJ too – I think you’ll definitely see him getting bigger and bigger over the next few years. Thanks for your time Gareth, roll on the 8th October! Garuda & Digital Society present GARETH EMERY: THE NORTHERN LIGHTS CONCERT plus special guests Sean Tyas, Orkidea, Greg Downey, Ben Gold, Mark Eteson and more. @ O2 Academy, Leeds. 13. Garuda & Digital Society Interview Sean Tyas ahead of his Performance at Gareth Emery: The Northern Lights Concert @ O2 Academy Leeds, Friday 8th October Sean Tyas Hi mate, how’s it going? – your performing at the much anticipated Northern Lights Concert with Gareth Emery on the 8th October in Leeds to celebrate the launch of his debut artist album. What are your thoughts on the man of the moment? Gareth’s awesome, I’ve only really gotten to know him a tad better over the last few months at a bunch of gigs and he’s a cool dude! I really respect his wide range of versatility as a DJ because of his track selection which really chameleons well into any type of club. That’s right I just use “chameleon” as a verb. 2010 has been a great year for you on tour. What have been highlights - any special gigs or events that have really stood out? Trance Energy mainstage of course. I’d have to say up until now that would easily be the highlight of my career thus far, but other things that have simply been just great were the Australia tour earlier this year, 4 gigs over in Miami for WMC, ASOT 450 in Toronto, and one of my personal faves, the Luminosity Beach Party in Holland. On the production front - any news on forthcoming material? Which tracks out there are really doing the damage on the dance floor right now? I have been LOVING the new BK & Organ Donors stuff lately…. Who knew they would convert to such an awesome banging sound appropriate for a trance DJ? On my own front, you will be very surprised to hear what a couple of my new projects sound like. Very melodic but much slow (same punch I promise). Don’t let that fool you though, the new collab of myself and Patterson is well underway and im working on several other trancers at the moment as well. Podcasting & Radioshows have become an important part of an artists visibility in the modern era – tell us about what you have got going on? I can proudly say as of writing this I’m prepping my 62nd episode of my Tytanium Sessions show, a weekly radioshow that goes out on afterhours every Monday and then in Podcast version early every Tuesday morning (5AM UK time usually!) It’s basically been my pride and joy for the last 12 months, as I’ve been really working extra hard listening to everything I get to make sure is the best collection of tunes I like, while maintaining that each and every show is completely new stuff. I have to say it makes me smile sometime because I get phone calls and messages from OTHER DJs who apparently listen to my show then ask me where I got which tracks from where as THEY now want to play them. Finally, any words of wisedom for the masses as we approach The Northern Lights Concert? The basic idea of trance music is about to change. I’m not sure how, but it is long overdue for it. I am so excited to see what the next 2 years will bring, whether it be mine or from other producers, but it is sure to fun! Thanks again, looking forward to a superb night!
