  1. the gannet group (at least all their wisconsin papers) dropped doonesbury a long time ago

anyone notice how unfunny modern comic strips are? comics with real life storylines like crankshaft or for better or worse, the family circus (which hasn't been even mildly amusing for decades) and so on

get fuzzy is kind of funny, but other than that its a page written by out of touch, unfunny old people, or guys living off of their dad's legacy

  2. i havent heard anything by TMBG except a single which was popular here a while back - "birdhouse in your soul".

    What are their best albums?

    apollo 18 is my favorite

flood is also good, that's where "birdhouse" comes from

their stuff is so diverse, there is something interesting on all of the albums

(there is a 2 disc "greatest hits" called "30 years of dial a song", a good sample)

  3. I have to say I agree with redneck. This isn't a first amendment battle; she's free to say whatever she wants. But no where in the constituition does it say you have to put up with everything everybody says. Otherwise what freedom do business owners have?

I mean are my employees allowed just to say whatever they want and me not be able to fire them? No! How do I get to play judge and jury? Well, it's my business, not some public forum.

    yes

performers are glorified slaves--how dare they defy the wishes of their masters? they don't deserve to have 30 second opinions between 4 minute songs

did she go on an anti government tirade for an half an hour? nope. she called mm a patriot and then played desperado

musicians should just say "thanksa massa" and "yessuh" and sing songs like a jukebox

    don't want opinions? try muzak

  4. unmentioned is the fact that she said before the show that she was trying to get fired

(from the AP source)"In an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal before the show, Ronstadt said, 'I keep hoping that if I'm annoying enough to them, they won't hire me back.'"

    moore's response (same AP wire)

Moore said Timmins owes Ronstadt an apology.

"I have an idea how you can make it up to her - and to the millions of Americans you have offended," Moore wrote. "Invite her back and I'll join her in singing 'America the Beautiful' on your stage. Then I will show 'Fahrenheit 9/11' free of charge to all your guests and anyone else in Las Vegas who wants to see it."

    Wilco

all the talent from Uncle Tupelo went to Son Volt in the great schism

Farrar is 100x better than Tweedy, but Tweedy has a cult of jam band potheads generating spin for him on their blogs

  5. TMBG have never had significant industry support

if they can make some money off of this setup, i'm all for it, because maybe some other groups will do it too. unlike itunes etc. where the money goes to the RIAA , this goes to the band

by selling a cd, they get a buck--by selling an online album they can make significantly more than that--they paid their dues for 20 years, i think they deserve it (plus the cd costs 16, and the online is 10, but since they give you a pdf of covers, there is no real difference)

    (i gave them $14.98)

  6. they might be giants started their own online music store, but without the DRM bullshit of the major labels

pure unadulterated 256 LAME mp3 at a buck a track (9.99 an album) complete with pdf album art

they are selling a selection of their newest albums, but also their most recent live shows (with free samples)

i love TMBG, and i hope this setup works well for them

  7. if you really want to keep trasck of something, subscribe to the thread

the fact that there are sticky topics that haven't had a response in a month is a symptom of an illness

  8. rock drummers are the bottom of the food chain anyway

even a "great" rock drummer is about 3 steps ahead of the fry cook at wendy's

any rock drummer can be replaced with absolutely no affect on the band (unless they happen to own the van that carries the equipment around)

  9. You're right...there are a lot of them...

but most of them are used on a regular basis so it makes the threads easy to find for those of us who are too lazy to search :D

A separate area might be a solution though.

laziness isn't a good enough reason

stickying is for important threads, or ones of lasting value, not for todays tennis scores

just because a mod can sticky a thread for their own convenience doesn't mean they should

  10. I like them.

My all time favorite would have to be "Free Fallin"

free fallin' is not from a heartbreakers album--full moon fever was a solo project with jeff lynne (though heartbreakers contributed individually to various songs) full moon fever featured the wilburys in fact

Any diehard Petty fan will agree that the musical chemistry between Petty and the Heartbreakers is more tangible than that of any other band he has played with (including the Traveling Wilburys, who also featured Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, and George Harrison.

any die hard petty fan knows that the relationship between petty and the heartbreakers has been tenuous and volatile, members have come and gone (often explosively), and their best work together ended in 1981

full moon fever ushered in a new "music for fun" era (rather than music as contractual obligation) where members freely did other projects, and the later projects (including the wilburys and the petty solo project wildflowers) were a lot better than the stuff made between 1981 and 1989 (and recently for that matter)
