3. In the wake of OFCOM’s publication of its Initial Obligations Code for the UK’s much-delayed Digital Economy Act, the government said it would remove a pair of controversial sections from the legislation. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said that following OFCOM’s findings that they would prove inefficient, sections 17 and 18 of the DEA – which relate to having copyright-infringing sites blocked at the ISP level – would be taken out completely. In practical terms though, they are being removed because they are no longer needed. A 2011 court case against Usenet indexing site Newzbin2 by the MPA showed that existing legislation could be used to have a site blocked by ISPs in the UK. A similar process was repeated earlier this year by the BPI against infamous torrent site The Pirate Bay. The question remained, however, whether the movie studios or record labels would come back for more, to cut off other sites using the same legal processes. Today, we may have the first signs of an answer. If communication being sent out by music licensing group PPL to its members is any barometer, some pretty major torrent sites will soon come under the legal spotlight of the BPI. The letter goes on to state that the action against The Pirate Bay was coordinated by the BPI but that the job still isn’t finished, and that “..other similar BitTorrent sites exist which provide facilities via which internet users can illegally download recorded music from, and illegally make it available to, other internet users.” To this end, PPL is now checking among its members to make sure that none have licensed their music to any of these leading torrent sites: - Extratorrent - Demonoid - Kickass Torrents - H33T - Torrent Reactor - Fenopy The PPL says it doesn’t expert to learn that members have licensed work but in the event they have (or have even been approached by the sites listed above) they should contact the BPI’s legal team by next Tuesday July 10th. TorrentFreak contacted the BPI’s Director of Communications Adam Liversage for comment but at the time of publication were yet to receive a response. 9. This is a day of celebration. This is the day when citizens of Europe and the world won over unelected bureaucrats who were being wooed and lobbied by the richest corporations of the planet. The battleground wasn’t some administrative office, but the representatives of the people – the European Parliament – which decided in the end to do its job beautifully, and represent the people against special interests. The road to today’s victory was hard and by no means certain. 478 against, 39 in favor and 165 abstentions What lead us here? Six months ago, the situation looked very dark. It was all but certain that ACTA would pass unnoticed in silence. The forces fighting for citizens’ rights tried to have it referred to the European Court of Justice in order to test its legality and to buy some time. But then, something happened. A monster by the name of SOPA appeared in the United States. Thousands of websites went dark on January 18 and millions of voices cried out, leaving Congress shell-shocked over the fact that citizens can get that level of pissed off at corporate special interests. SOPA was killed. In the wake of this, as citizens realized that they don’t need to take that kind of corporate abuse lying down and asking for more, the community floodlights centered on ACTA. The activism carried over beautifully to defeat this monster. Early February, there were rallies all over Europe, leaving the European Parliament equally shell-shocked. The party groups turned on a cent and declared their opposition to ACTA in solidarity with the citizen rallies all over the continent, after having realized what a piece of shameless mail-order legislation it really was, to the horrors of the corporate shills who thought this was a done deal. Those shills tried, tried hard, tried right up until today, to postpone the vote on ACTA past the attention of the public and the activists. Alas, they don’t understand the net. And there’s one key thing right there: the net doesn’t forget. But the key takeaway here is that it was us, the activists, that made this happen. Everyone in the European Parliament are taking turns to praise all the activists across Europe and the world for drawing their attention to what utter garbage this really was, not some run-of-the-mill rubberstamp paper, but actually a really dangerous piece of proposed legislation. Everybody thanks the activists for that. Yes, that’s you. You should lean back, smile, and pat yourself on the back here. Each and every one of us has every reason to feel proud today. What comes next? In theory, ACTA could still come into force between the United States and a number of smaller states. Ten states have been negotiating it, and six of those need to ratify it to have it come into force. In theory, this could become a treaty between the United States, Morocco, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, and Switzerland. (But wait, the Mexican Senate has already rejected ACTA. As has Australia and Switzerland in practice. Oh well… a treaty between the United States and Morocco, then, in the unlikely event that the United States will actually and formally ratify it. You can see where this is going.) As described before on TorrentFreak, without the support of the European Union, ACTA is dead. Doesn’t exist. The European Commissioner responsible for the treaty, Karel de Gucht, has said that he will ignore any rejections and re-table it before the European Parliament until it passes. That’s not going to happen. Parliament takes its dignity very seriously and does not tolerate that kind of contempt, fortunately. This is something relatively new in the history of the European Union’s democracy – the first time I saw Parliament stand up for its dignity was during the Telecoms Package, where the Commission also tried to ram through three-strikes provisions. (Instead, Parliament made “three strikes” schemes illegal in the entire European Union.) That said, many of the bad things in ACTA will return under other names. For the lobbyists, this is a nine-to-five job of jabbing against the legislation until it gives way. Just another day at work. We need to remain vigilant against special interests who will return again, again, and again, until we make sure that the legislative road for them is completely blocked. We must remain watchful. But not today. Today, we celebrate a job extraordinarily well done. Today, on July 4, Europe celebrates a day of independence from American special interests. Today, we stood up for our most basic rights against corporate giants, and won. Congratulations to all of us, and thanks to all brothers and sisters on the barricades across the world who made this happen. (This article is also posted on falkvinge.net.) In addition to the awesome "The Hobbit" images we saw earlier, this week's issue of the magazine also includes a new look at Guillermo del Toro's upcoming film "Pacific Rim." The first image from the movie introduced us to Idris Elba's character, and now we get to meet those played by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi. Shock Till You Drop uploaded a scan of the image, which shows the two actors getting ready to start up their obsolete robot, Jaeger. As we already know from the film's recently-released plot synopsis, Hunnam and Kikuchi are the stars of this film. They play a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee, respectively, who end being humanity's last hope for survival against a race of monstrous creatures known as the Kaiju. The aforementioned Jaegers are giant robots created to fight against the Kaiju, but it's only the one gunned by Hunnam and Kikuchi that actually stands a chance against "the mounting apocalypse." We're hoping that del Toro brings a trailer for "Pacific Rim" to Comic-Con so we can get a better sense of how the Jaeger and Kaiju look in action, but we love what a departure these robots are from what we're used to seeing from del Toro. Our guess is the Kaiji will look more in line with the creatures in "Hellboy," "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Cronos." "Pacific Rim" also stars Charlie Day, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff and hits theaters on July 12, 2013. What do you think of this still from "Pacific Rim"? 21. Get More: Music News By Rob Markman Everyone loves a good competition, but when it comes to Chris Brown versus Drake and the dis track that Breezy released over the weekend, some of the superstars closest friends are calling for a truce. "Nobody wants to see them beef," Tyga told MTV News while on the red carpet for the 2012 BET Awards on Sunday (July 1). "They both make great music, they're both talented, but at the end of the day, as men, they have to figure out what they want to do." Tyga, who is a part of Lil Wayne's Young Money crew alongside Drake, has been a longtime friend and collaborator of Chris Brown's. In 2010, Tyga and Breezy dropped their collaborative Fan of a Fan mixtape, so T-Raw is kind of stuck in the middle. "Chris is my brother, Drake is family too, so it's like at the end of the day, they gotta handle that like men," he said. "It's like nobody else can mediate that, and it's like that's how it goes sometimes." On June 14, Brown and Drake's respective entourages got into a bottle-throwing brawl at a New York City nightclub, and on Saturday, Breezy dissed Drake in a rap freestyle over Chief Keef's popular "I Don't Like" instrumental. "One on one, what you scared, bruh?/ Matter fact, Take Care, bruh," Chris spit, referencing both the melee and the title of Drizzy's sophomore album. G.O.O.D. Music's Pusha T, who was in Los Angeles recording with Brown this weekend, applauded the Virginia singer's rap performance. "Chris is so artistic, man. He's just a free spirit, so you just gotta like it and accept it for what it is," Push said. "Lyrically, I think he gets busy. He's a writer." Big Sean is also good friends with Brown, and while he hasn't talked to him personally about the tiff with Drake, Sean urged his buddy to put the negativity behind him. "Hopefully they get it resolved, honestly, man. People ain't got no time for no beef," the Finally Famous lyricist said. "People ain't got no time to be beefin'. We workin' too hard for our fam, for our kids, our unborn kids to have a bright future. Nobody got no time for that." Next time Sean gets to sit down with Chris, he will make sure to tell him that. "I'm real good friends with Chris. I'mma make sure I tell him that to his face," he said. Do you think Chris Brown and Drake should end their beef? Let us know in the comments. 22. By Rob Markman Don’t expect A$AP Rocky and SpaceGhostPurrp to dead their beef any time soon, or ever."F him, f--- him, straight up. He's one of those cats, like a lot of guys just hang around me, try to build hype, and when they dip off, start throwing dirt on the young on the blood," A$AP Rocky told MTV News of SpaceGhost on Sunday while he walked the red carpet at the 2012 BET Awards in Los Angeles. "They can't stop the pretty mother----er." Over the past couple of weeks, Purrp — who produced Rocky's Internet favorite "Pretty Flacko" and rhymed alongside Rock on "Purple Swag: Chapter 2" — has been vocal about his distaste for the budding rap star and his A$AP Mob. After SGP accused Rocky's groupmate A$AP Twelvyy of jumping his Raider Klan affiliate Matt Stoops, SpaceGhost went on YouTube to vent. "We Raider Klan, man. We got our own sh-- going on. And that's how the f--- it is. We ain't A$AP," SpaceGhost said in the video, which has since been taken down. "I showed love to them n---as last year, and some sh-- went down, and we don't f--- with each other no more." It used to be all good. Back in May, SGP sat with MTV News while he was in New York City promoting his debut album, Mysterious Phonk: The Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp. At the time, there was no drama between his Raider Klan and A$AP Mob, but Purrp broke down how he came to know Rocky. "Me and the Mob, we reached out to each other through the Internet. We showed love to each other. We had a good time," he said of his A$AP relationship, which has since soured. "I came up to New York and met up with him, we got to know each other real well, and then we just became a little family. "I'm affiliated with A$AP. If I see him, we still do our handshake, we still got love, we're real close homeys," he added. Now it appears that all love is lost. In addition to the fight with Twelvyy, Ghost and his Raider Klan crew went on to charge that the A$AP Mob took a big chunk of their swag from the Miami collective. Not the case, says Rocky. "At the end of the day, he know what it is, and he tryin' to lie to people pumpin' that we took styles from him," the "Peso" MC said. "I mean, if you really look at it, the proof is in the pudding. He's corny at the end of the day. Stick to makin' beats, that's all I gotta say." Do you think SpaceGhostPurrp and A$AP Rocky can work out their differences? Sound off in the comments! The callback here is apparently "New writers!" Dan Aykroyd was quoted by WIVB about the new development while at a promotional event for his Crystal Head Vodka. "We've got a new writing staff working on it now," Aykroyd said. "It's got to be prefect. That's the whole thing. There's no point in doing it unless it's perfect. So that's what we're up to now." "Ghostbusters III" has faced numerous ups and downs in its lengthy development process. Way back in 2010 when MTV reported that writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg were working on the script, there was some alleged tension between director Ivan Reitman and Sony. At this point, the film was also planning on being out in 2011. Clearly that did not happen. Casting has also been a drawn out topic of speculation, particular whether original "Ghostbusters" and "Ghostbusters II" star Bill Murray would return for a third go-around. In March, Akroyd stated that Bill Murray would not be returning for the third installment. Then just a few weeks ago, Murray spoke on "The Late Show with David Letterman" about the need for the project to have a high-quality script like the original. Aykroyd didn't name any names about who makes up this new writing staff, but a Crystal Head Vodka cheers to these new writers—here's to hoping that they can help give this long-talked-about project the push it needs to get off the ground once and for all. 25. Get More: Music News By Rob Markman Yelawolf and Machine Gun Kelly have been going at it for quite some time and this past weekend on Shade 45’s All Out radio show, Yela threw a little jab toward MGK and on the Red Carpet for Sunday night’s BET 2012 Awards, Kells fired back. "I love him, man. You gotta respect your elders, and he's an old man so I gotta give it up," the 22-year old MGK told MTV News, mocking Yelawolf, who is 10 years older. "I respect all grandpas around the world doin' it big. Salute." It's not the worst thing that either MC has said about each other. After last fall's Shady Records cypher at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards MGK went on record saying that he felt Yela took some subliminal shots at him in his verse. During an interview with Bootleg Kev, Yela claimed he wasn't talking about Kells, but did issue a challenge. "Machine Gun Kelly, if want it, come get it. Drop your verse, do whatever you want to do. If you want to take it there, we can take it there. And that goes for anybody else, too." MGK later downplayed any notion of beef in a November radio interview, but when Yela was asked about the Machine Gun Kelly comparisons, he took the opportunity to give the rival rapper a ribbing. "It's probably the most insulting thing on the planet, to be asked to sign a Machine Gun Kelly autograph," he said before doing an MGK impersonation. "I'm like 'Yea, mother----er. Let me sign your Birkenstock mother----er.' " What are your thoughts on Machine Gun Kelly and Yelawolf's rivalry? Let us know in the comments.
