"The Twilight Saga" might be ending soon, but Kristen Stewart's story is only just beginning. The 22-year-old has just landed a major leading role in "Crazy Heart" director Scott Cooper's upcoming indie "Lie Down In Darkness." Vulture broke the news, saying that Stewart will play the role of Peyton Loftis. The film is based off William Styron's 1951 novel of the same name that tells the story of the dysfunctional Loftis family set in Virginia in the 1950s. This isn't the only indie Stewart has starred in that's set in the '50s. She also has Walter Salles' adaptation of "On the Road," which is due out in theaters at some point later this year. Now that her commitment to "The Twilight Saga" is up it's clear that she's reveling in her return to indies. Though Stewart's character Peyton Loftis is the central character in "Lie Down In Darkness," the story actually takes place during her funeral. The novel is told through a series of flashbacks by other characters, and we're assuming the movie will likely be told in the same fashion. Peyton is the biggest role to be cast, but actors still need to be found for her mother Helen, her crippled sister Maudie, her father Milton, his mistress, Peyton's husband and the Loftis family's black servants. This is a big grab for Stewart, but it was actually Jennifer Lawrence who was long vying for the role. Lawrence also has spent plenty of time in the indie scene but hit it big when she was cast in the adaptation of young adult sensation "The Hunger Games." In an interview with W back in 2010, she admitted that she was petitioning Cooper for the role of Peyton. “I am obsessed with that part,” she said. “I have this feeling of protectiveness over characters I want to play. I worry about them -- if someone else gets the part, I’m afraid they won’t do it right; they’ll make the character a victim or they’ll make her a villain or they’ll just get it wrong somehow.” She continued, “I’m trying to write the director of Lie Down in Darkness a letter to convince him that I should be in his movie. I’ll chase him if I have to. I’ll sit outside his house. I’m beside myself over that script. When I get like that, anything’s possible.” Of course, Lawrence has gone on to have one of the busiest schedules in Hollywood thanks to her commitments to "The Hunger Games" and the "X-Men" movies, so it's no surprise that the role ultimately went to someone else. Up next, Stewart has Nick Cassavetes' "Cali" and she is still attached to "Snow White and the Huntsman 2." Do you think Stewart will be a good fit for this part? 3. via 50 Cent Twitter By Julia Brokaw This week Mike Tyson proved that he’s not only a champion in the boxing ring but also on the Broadway stage. His Superstar friends like 50 cent and Kanye West, among others, came out to support Tyson’s Broadway debut in “Undisputed Truth,” a one-man show directed by none other than Spike Lee. In the 90-minute show, Tyson talks candidly about everything from his exes to his drug addiction and the show has been described as somewhat of a confessional. Iron Mike is already earning praise for his performance in the Twitter-sphere. Lee proudly tweeted about Tyson’s “2 standing ovations for 1st preview tonight” and 50 cent also gave Mike’s performance two thumbs up, tweeting, “I was crying he was so funny. if your not a regular broadway play fan you still have to go see it.” “Undisputed Truth” officially opens Thursday night (August 2) at the Longacre Theatre in NYC, and Spike Lee's new film "Red Hook Summer" is set to hit theaters on August 10. Chewbacca is one of the most recognizable characters in the "Star Wars" universe, but what about the man inside the costume? That's who we'll be meeting in the upcoming movie by "Fanboys" director Kyle Newman. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the director and bonafide "Star Wars" fan has picked up the Black List script "Chewie," which was written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux. The film details the life of Peter Mayhew, the actor who balanced his life as a hospital worker with his time portraying Chewbacca. Mayhew will be involved in the project as well, as he confirmed in a tweet. "Yes, we’re working with Kyle Newman and the team on CHEWIE, The Movie and are hopeful it can move forward. Rumors can begin now, Forcecast!" he tweeted. The seven-foot-three actor played Chewbacca in all four of the "Star Wars" movies the character appeared in, as well as the Disney ride Star Tours, the "Star Wars Holiday Special" and even episodes of "The Muppet Show" and "Glee." THR says the script is set against the backdrop of the creation of "Star Wars" and "tracks Mayhew as he tries to balance a career as a hospital worker while chasing Hollywood dreams by playing a suited alien who would go on to become one of the most iconic screen sidekicks in modern times." It's unclear if this will be a comedy like "Fanboys" was or if it will be more of a drama. We also don't know where Newman is going to find someone nearly as tall as Mayhew who can also act. But hey, at least Chewbacca is finally getting his own standalone movie. The Wookie deserves it after all this time. Are you glad "Chewie" is finally being made? 8. Every year Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN claims to shut down a few hundred torrent sites, but SumoTorrent has never been among them. Back in 2007 BREIN managed to kick the torrent site out of the Netherlands where it was hosted by Leaseweb, but it continued to operate from Canada. Later, SumoTorrent returned to the Netherlands at XS Networks, again attracting the attention of BREIN. Hoping to take the site quickly offline, the anti-piracy group asked XS Networks to shut it down and hand over the personal details of the owner. XS Networks refused and said it would only respond to a court order. The provider and SumoTorrent eventually agreed to voluntarily hand over some personal details, but not before the torrent site had moved to a new host in the Ukraine. To make matters worse for BREIN, the personal details on record at the hosting provider turned out to be false. So SumoTorrent escaped again, and according to BREIN the Dutch hosting provider is to blame. The anti-piracy group has taken the matter to court and is demanding damages from XS Networks. BREIN argues that the provider acted negligently when it refused to take the site down when asked to do so. Aside from thousands of euros in legal costs, BREIN also wants the provider to pay for the infringing content that was downloaded via SumoTorrent. During a hearing at a The Hague court yesterday the group demanded 20,000 euros to compensate for the legal expenses incurred to date, plus added damages for yet-to-be-calculated copyright infringements. BREIN further said that it suspects XS Networks of holding back information that could identify the SumoTorrent owner, a claim the hosting company denies. XS Networks did say during the hearing that it would hand over a relevant bank statement to the anti-piracy group. BREIN’s lawyer noted that their purpose is to deal with sites such as SumoTorrent, but XS Networks’ lawyer Steven Kroesbergen sees things differently. He thinks BREIN’s plan was to deliberately destroy XS Networks through expensive legal proceedings, so they can intimidate other hosting companies in the same manner. The Court now has to decide whether the provider can indeed be held liable for infringements that occurred through a torrent site they hosted. This will be an important verdict – a loss for XS Networks means that other Dutch hosting providers will face serious liability issues. For XS Networks it is already too late. The company pulled the plug earlier this year and left the following statement: “In our opinion there is nothing illegal about the websites that were hosted with XS Networks and we are thankful for the warm messages from other webhosters and appreciation of our clients.” “The web is all about innovation and changing the rules. Change which some industries are fighting for years, by throwing money out of the window on law-suits instead of a new business model.” Source: Anti-Piracy Group Sues Torrent Site Webhost for Damages </img> </img> View the full article
9. By Ade Mangum It should be safe to say that Drake is Aaliyah’s biggest fan. From sampling her song “At Your Best (You are Love)” on "Unforgettable" from his debut album Thank Me Later, to a few mentions of her on his follow-up, Take Care, and even getting a tattoo of the songstress’ face on his back, his admiration can’t be contested. Now the Toronto rapper is getting ready to unveil a new feature from the deceased songstress. After shout outs and permanent portraits what more could Drizzy do to show his idolization? Well, he found a way. He is rumored to be executive producing Aaliyah’s posthumous album. In March, producer, Jeffery “J. Dub” Walker, of the Hitmen tweeted, “Just got great news today; the smash unreleased song called “Steady Ground” I produced on #Aaliyah is gonna be on her upcoming album:)” The tweet was quickly deleted and Aaliyah’s label, Background Records never confirmed that there was an upcoming album. Later in March, Drake appeared on the Tim Westwood radio show and alluded to “special things” related to Aaliyah. “I have some great Aaliyah news coming soon,” he said. “Just some special things. Great things for music, period.” Not only is he said to be executive producing the project, but he will reportedly debut a new single featuring vocals from Aaliyah at his OVO Festival, taking place this Sunday at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto, Canada. Last year, he surprised fans with an appearance from the legendary Stevie Wonder and if he is indeed going to debut his Aaliyah collaboration, that would certainly be the perfect platform to do it. What will this new track possibly sound like? Both Drake and Aaliyah fans have high expectations for a duet between the two and if Drake is able to put an ounce of his passion for “Baby Girl” into this project, it’s sure to be phenomenal. Aaliyah released her debut album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number in 1994, followed by 1996’s breakthrough One in a Million and 2001’s Aaliyah. After her death, the two posthumous albums, 2002’s I Care 4 U and 2005’s Ultimate Aaliyah were released featuring best-of material and unreleased songs. By Ashleigh Schmitz When we see a film boast a cast that includes Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini and Richard Jenkins, you may not have to show us a trailer to get us in the theater. But when the trailer for "Killing Them Softly" looks like this, it's only an added incentive. Based on the George V. Higgins 1974 novel "Cogan's Trade," the Andrew Dominik-directed film brings us a mobster movie to hold us over until "Gangster Squad" comes out in January. When two newbies with sawed-off shotguns and women's tights on their heads interrupt a mob-protected poker game, the crime boss hires Pitt to find and kill them. Pitt's style is to "kill 'em softly" according to the trailer, which means bringing in Gandolfini's character to do the dirty work. The fact that "Killing Them Softly" premiered at the Cannes earlier this year to a bevy of positive reviews only adds fuel to the fire. You don't have to ask us twice if this movie makes our must list this fall. 12. After releasing an assortment of personal photos and video clips on her social networks pages over the past few months, Beyonce is now inching one step closer to opening up her life to the public. The megastar is currently in the process of shopping around a documentary feature about her life in which she will star in, direct and produce. "Beyoncé: Year of 4," the singer’s recent MTV documentary, chronicled her journey to create her 2011 hit album 4 and now Bey is aiming to claim the director’s chair this go round. According to the Los Angeles Times, Beyoncé's agents are currently looking to nab a distribution deal for a documentary that will follow her life and career with a blend performance footage and confessional interviews. A source close to the film also revealed that 20 minutes of footage is already being shown to prospective distributors. With all the things that have occurred in the year-plus since the making of "Year of 4”--most notably Beyonce giving birth to her first child, Blue Ivy--the pop star will have much to explore in the upcoming film. She put on her first post-baby show in May with three blowout concerts at the Revel resort in Atlantic City. 13. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy Azealia Banks and Nicki Minaj appear to have exchanged a series of tweet jabs against one another over the past two days. On July 30, Nicki sent out a cryptic "#ManTheseBitchesDelirious" to an unnamed target. Azealia responded with "Did you mean... "delusional?" ... Delirious was the wrong word. @nickiminaj ...." a day later. Banks then continued with a string of tweets, no directed per se at Nicki, but apparently thinly veiled references to the Barbie. "Use good grammar when insulting others," and "I don't believe "Rap game" hierarchy ......... Sorry." This comes on the heels of news that Azealia declined an offer to tour with Nicki. Some speculate that the refusal on the part of the more junior Banks was disrespectful. “I got invited to tour with Nicki Minaj in Europe but I can’t go because I have to finish my album during that time," tweeted a disappointed Banks. Nicki Minaj has already announced that fellow YMCMB artist Tyga and British singer Misha B will be joining her on the upcoming UK tour run. The always-outspoken Banks is working on her debut LP Broke with Expensive Taste and was recently named as the face of Alexander Wang's new fall collection. Most "Bond" Moments: To escape an alligator enclosure, Bond walks across the backs of several gators. Sign of the Times: "Get me a make on a white pimpmobile." Place in Bond History: "Live and Let Die" marked the beginning of Roger Moore's reign as Bond and a very different 007. The shift from Connery to Moore is as clear as day, even in this first film. While Lazenby got by largely on an imitation of what Connery did with the character, Moore always seemed content to go his own way. Review: Once again, time has caught up with Mr. Bond, and the result is not pretty. For the first time in the series, "Live and Let Die" engages African American culture and does so in a way that must have caused a few incredulous head shakes even in 1973. Almost every African American character is a villain or betrays Bond, and while a lack of subtlety when handling race has always been a forte of the series, the caricatures of "Live and Let Die" hit close to home. Even if you're able to look past the race issue, "Live and Let Die" underwhelms. The transition to Roger Moore in the lead role makes Connery's absence all the more notable. Things like Bond's trickery when seducing Solitaire comes off as particularly manipulative and creepy when delivered in Moore's softer, more delicate voice. The color of the Caribbean and Voodoo culture cannot do enough to disguise another boilerplate Bond plot. Once again, a villain attempts to flood a particular market—in this case heroin—in order to gain control of it. The film's most extended action sequence, the overly long boat chase sequence, fails to establish any stakes; we simply have no idea why the chase is taking place or where it's heading, which, oddly enough, sums up the movie. The Bond-a-Thond will return next week in "The Man with the Golden Gun." What do you think of "Live and Let Die"? Whichever actress gets the part could potentially be signed up for a trilogy. Apparently Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel were both in discussions for the role as well, but that has fallen through. Fortunately they both have another little film called "Total Recall" coming out this weekend that could turn into a franchise in its own right. Deadline broke the news and is saying that this part will be "high profile." Considering the fact that some previous Jack Ryan films have skimped on parts for the ladies, it sounds like whoever gets cast as this movie's female lead will likely have a beefed up role. Knightley is the biggest of these three stars right now, so it makes sense why she would be the one being considered the frontrunner. Though she already has a big action franchise under her belt ("Pirates of the Caribbean"), Knightley has seemed to steer away from big budget films for the sake of indies and period dramas in recent years. Meanwhile, "Like Crazy" star Jones and "Lost" leading lady Lilly are both on the rise, with Lilly likely to break out later this year to some degree thanks to her role in "The Hobbit" films. In the past, Anne Archer, Gates McFadden and Bridget Moynahan have played the role of Ryan's wife, Any of these three actresses on the shortlist would be a good replacement, but I personally have a soft spot for Jones. Her performance in "Like Crazy" blew me away, and she could definitely hold her own against a heavy hitter like Pine. She just needs a chance to really prove her stuff. Accordingly, I rescind my signature from the letter which was sent to the Estate, and which should never have gone public."' Jermaine is referencing a letter that was sent to the executors of his late brother Michael's estate. On the confusing whereabouts of Katherine, Jermaine says that he never meant to keep Katherine from seeing her grandchildren and that the family was just '"worried a call home would first entail, or lead to, conversations with individuals we are in dispute with and that would, therefore, increase pressure on Mother—and pressure was what a doctor said she didn't need. This was why we went to the house in Calabasas to talk directly with the kids and merely discuss arrangements for them to meet with their grandmother."' The very public tiffs have played out in the media as well as via social media. Addressing this, Jermaine says, '"Moving forward, the most effective way to best serve Mother's welfare, and that of Michael's children, is to start a collective dialogue, in private. Mistakes have been made and irrational things have been said on both sides in a highly-charged emotional environment. It is time for us all to draw a line in the sand and move towards peace, co-operation, love and healing. I truly hope that we can find it in our hearts to do so. Because above and beyond anything else, what matters...is family."' But Jermaine seems optimistic for the future and confident in the family's resiliency. '"Mistakes have been made and irrational things have been said on both sides in a highly-charged emotional environment. It is time for us all to draw a line in the same and move towards peace, cooperation, love and healing. I truly hope that we can find it in our hearts to do so. Because above and beyond anything else, what matters…is family."' This all comes on the heels of a new revelation that Janet Jackson did not fight, verbally or physically, with her niece Paris and previous media speculation was unfounded.
