  8. christ almighty...these revisionists can`t leave anything alone can they?? " While he may not have been gay, Lincoln did share a double bed with an attractive younger man, Joshua Fry Speed, for four years. Certain homosexual writers state outright that Lincoln was bisexual, but there is no actual evidence to this effect other than assumed innuendo and wishful thinking. " Lovers or Friends? The exact nature of the love and intimacy that was shared between Abraham Lincoln and Joshua Fry Speed has come under much speculation in recent years. When they met, Speed regarded Lincoln as "melancholy" and "gloomy." Feeling for Lincoln's need for shelter, Speed offered him the other half of his double bed. Very close to the time this offer was made, a man by the name of William Butler and his wife offered Lincoln a bed of his own in their home. Lincoln politely declined the gesture, though Mrs. Butler did regularly wash Lincoln's laundry and maintain his wardrobe. Some researchers feel that Speed was the most intimate friend that Lincoln ever had. At the height of their relationship, Speed remarked to Mr. William Herndon that, "no two men were ever more intimate" and that "Lincoln disclosed his whole heart to me." Herndon, who was Lincoln's law partner at one time, said that Lincoln "loved this man more than anyone dead or living." Although sentiments of love and expressions of feelings between men in the 19th century cannot be interpreted with the same sense of social propriety that is generally popularized in modern times, certain questions still arise in the minds of modern scholars. Why would Lincoln decline an offer for a bed of his own rather than choosing to share one? Why would he prefer to haul his dirty laundry to the Butler's when he could have lived in the same house where it was cleaned? Perhaps Lincoln was lonely and wanted to be close to someone, or maybe the Butlers did not impress him with affability. Perhaps Lincoln did not want to offend Speed by changing his mind and deciding to live with the Butlers. This decision may be thought of as the crux of all speculation about the nature of their relationship...

  11. Offbeat News Police find marijuana stashed in coffins Wednesday, December 15, 2004 Posted: 7:30 PM EST (0030 GMT) OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (Reuters) -- A routine traffic stop turned into a drug bust when Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers found 610 pounds of marijuana stashed in four coffins. Authorities say Timothy Hynd and Robert Dean Harper were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute before being released on Monday. The arrest occurred on Sunday, highway patrol spokesman Lt. Brandon Kopepasah said, after troopers stopped a truck traveling slightly above the speed limit near the rural city of Salisaw. The men consented to a search, and trained dogs "hit" on the cargo section of the truck, he said. "They unloaded 22 caskets," Kopepasah said. "You had to unload all those caskets and the very front caskets were loaded with marijuana." An attorney for one of the men said his client was unaware there was marijuana in the caskets and was only delivering them. "He didn't check inside the caskets for drugs -- would you?" attorney Donn Baker said.

  17. american breed did release the original.....this one is a cover..very jazzy sound........ Amen Corner are best remembered for their number one hit, If paradise was half as nice, which was recorded on the Immediate label. The recordings they made for Immediate have been repackaged many times, but their earlier Decca recordings were unavailable on CD before this was released, except for Bend me shape me, which can be found on 60's various artists compilations. Andy Fairweather-Low, the lead singer, has a distinctive falsetto voice which is difficult to forget and it works just as well on these recordings, which have a definite R+B flavor, as it does on the music he recorded after leaving Decca. These tracks were recorded in 1967 and 1968 and yielded three hits - Bend me shape me (a cover of an American hit for American Breed), Gin house blues and High in the sky, though the first of these is much better known in Britain than the other two. All three turn up on Immediate collections via live recordings, but I much prefer the original studio versions. The set also includes great covers of Love me tender and Can't get used to losing you, which you certainly won't mistake for the originals - not just Andy's voice but the arrangements are very different. I don't know how well Amen Corner did in America, but they were certainly one of the best British groups of the late sixties. For anybody interested in British pop/R+B music of the late sixties, the Amen Corner is worth investigating.
  18. American Breed - Bend Me, Shape Me...have you heard the original version by `60`s band " amen corner " red????.....

  20. Pantera's break-up may have led fan to kill December 14, 2004 Nathan Gale was an oddball loner who craved friendship, a man in search of a calling. A passionate fan of the heavy metal band Pantera, Gale apparently took the group's break-up in 2003 as an insult. "When they broke up, I think he felt some kind of personal connection, like he felt left out or betrayed," said Mark Break, a former friend of Gale. "This kid listened to their albums every day. He was obsessed with Pantera." Those feelings of betrayal may have led Gale, 25, to jump onstage at the Alrosa Villa club in Columbus last Wednesday night and shoot guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott at least four times during a concert with his new band, Damageplan. Abbott and his brother, Vinnie Paul Abbott, left Pantera last year to form Damageplan. Vinnie Paul Abbott was onstage during the shooting but was not injured. After shooting Darrell Abbott, Gale killed three and wounded two others before a police officer shot him dead. Although Columbus police have not publicly discussed a motive, witnesses have said they heard Gale yell at Darrell Abbott, blaming him for Pantera's break-up. Break said Gale was known for bizarre behaviour such as petting an imaginary dog and staring at walls while muttering to himself. With thick glasses and the blue and white hockey jersey he wore the night of the shooting, Gale was often seen walking the streets of his hometown Marysville, listening to Pantera on his headphones. At 190 centimetres and 121 kilograms, he was frequently the butt of jokes and uncomfortable around girls, Break said. Gale graduated from high school in 1998 and laer completed a construction trade electrical program at a technical college. He had minor run-ins with police over the years and bounced from job to job, working as a mechanic, landscaper and pavement cleaner. He was discharged early from the US Marines a year ago, although the reason was unclear. A couple of friends said they had heard he suffered from mental illness. Rich Cencula, owner of Minit Lube in Marysville, where Gale worked briefly, said Gale wanted to learn to box and dreamed of playing professional football. Gale began playing semi-pro football recently for the Lima Thunder in Ohio. But he continued to live in Marysville, a city of about 25,000 about 40 kilometres from Columbus, where many residents work for factories that produce products for Honda, Nestle, Goodyear and other companies. Break said he and others began distancing themselves from Gale about eight months ago when he claimed Pantera stole lyrics from him and he spoke of killing others. "He told me once that God told him to kill Marilyn Manson," Break said. Autumn Bender, an employee at Bears Den tattoo parlour across from Gale's apartment on the town square, said she would sometimes have to ask him to leave because he stared at clients and made them uncomfortable. Although Gale seemed at odds with many people, another acquaintance said he remained close to his mother, Mary Clark, a waitress at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge. Clark did not return telephone calls seeking comment. A woman at her home who did not want to be identified said Gale's funeral would be private. Looking back, Break said he now recalls signs that might have been a precursor to the killings. "I wish I could have said something to somebody saying this guy could be dangerous, that this guy is just not right," Break said. "All of us were Pantera fans, but he took it past being a fan. He took it to an obsession."
