Phil Jackson Explains Why He Responded To Kendrick's 'Control' Verse

Kendrick Lamar name-checked veteran basketball coach Phil Jackson in his "Control" verse (If Phil Jackson came back, still no coachin' me) and when Jackson shouted him back on Twitter, it seemed like a new rap/sports bromance was budding. Sadly, not so much. Phil shares with Campus Insider that he hit up Kendrick only because Twitter told him so.

"That's the wonderful world of Twitter...You can communicate with people out of your range of influence and your social grouping," said Phil in the interview, shared by Complex.

@kendricklamar it’s okay to be cocky and sure, but we all need somebody to lean on. Let’s just call it mentoring.

He adds that because "the connection between basketball and rap is so deep," "Control" was on the minds of his followers and that's how he came to learn about the song. Phil says his Twitter fans flooded his mentions and urged him to respond to K Dot's lines.

So he did with the tweet, "it’s okay to be cocky and sure, but we all need somebody to lean on. Let’s just call it mentoring."

Wonder how Kendrick will respond to this news? Maybe he'll take Phil up on his offer as a mentor.
