If one movie is never enough for you and you're looking for a flick to get you in the mood for this week's new release, Double Feature Friday is here to help. Every week we break down the new releases and pair them with older movies that you should catch before heading out to the theater. Or just skip the new movie and check out the classic we recommend.

In recasting several of the supporting characters from "Clash of the Titans," "Wrath" picked up an exciting new Ares in Édgar Ramírez. It may not be a name you know now, but you will soon enough when he stars in Kathryn Bigelow's tentatively-titled Osama bin Laden thriller, "Zero Dark Thirty," with every other hot actor currently working. Ramírez had a minor role in "The Bourne Ultimatum," but his star-making turn came in the three-part miniseries "Carlos," where he plays one of the most notorious terrorists of all time. It's an impressive piece of work that leaves little doubt that Ramírez is the real deal and a soon-to-be star.

"Mirror Mirror" & "The Fall"
Before Tarsem Singh was directing Julia Roberts as the evil queen and even before he had Henry Cavill battling Mickey Rourke in sandals, the visionary director spent years and much of his own money to fund his passion project, "The Fall." The visually stunning film tells the story of a young girl listening to a story. When the focus of the movie switches to the fantasy land, the audience experiences everything as the young girl does. Not everything makes sense, and there are clear points where she misunderstands what the narrator is actually telling her. As a one-film justification for owning a Blu-ray player, "The Fall" works not only as a one-of-a-kind visual masterpiece, but also an endearing tale about why we like stories—and movies for the matter—so much.

"Intruders" & "28 Weeks Later"
When it was announced that Danny Boyle's indie-cred zombie flick, "28 Days Later," was to get a sequel called (what else?) "28 Weeks Later," it may have been easy to fear the worst. Instead of a pointless cash-in, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo delivered on bringing viewers back to the world of post-zombie apocalypse London and expanding upon the vision created by Boyle. Looking back at "28 Weeks Later" is also a fun way of seeing what a difference 5 years can make in the life of an actor. You might be surprised to learn that some of the supporting players in "28 Weeks Later" include Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne and Idris Elba. As Fresnadillo's follow-up to his zombie sequel, "Intruders" promises the same sense of dread and family-endangering horrors.

"Goon" & "Slap Shot"
It takes a hockey movie coming out in theaters to realize that there aren't a lot of hockey movie in theaters these days. With the release of the surprisingly charming "Goon," I suggest you go back to look at perhaps the greatest hockey movie of them all, "Slap Shot." Paul Newman plays a burnt-out pro, who comes to play and coach a minor league hockey team. He has to deal with unruly crowds, a difficult owner and a set of three brothers who want to do little else but fight, similar to Seann William Scott's character in "Goon."

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
