Oprah’s Whitney Houston Interview: Sister-In-Law Was ‘Afraid’ For Singer

Oprah Winfrey has secured the first interview with Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, her brother Gary Houston, and her sister-in-law and manager Patricia Houston which will air on the OWN network on March 11 at 9PM ET. But before the official air date, OWN has released a snippet of the interview with Patricia Houston, who, in response to a question Whitney’s downward spiral with drug abuse, tells Oprah that, “The handwriting was kind of on the wall.”

When asked if she felt that “drugs would end up taking” Whitney’s life, Patricia Houston responded, “The handwriting was kind of on the wall. I would be kidding myself to say otherwise.” Still, Patricia Houston admits that her sister-in-law was making changes in her life, when Oprah asked if she thought the 48-year-old would be gone too soon. “If things hadn’t changed,” she replied. “But things had, were, changing. Things were really changing with her. Very much so. It wasn’t about substance abuse or anything like that….I was afraid for other things, lifestyle, more so.”

Houston told Oprah that Whitney's lifestyle contributed to her turmoil. "I saw her chasing a dream...looking for love in all the wrong places," she said. After her turbulent relationship with Bobby Brown, Whitney was romantically linked to singer Ray J over the past few years, but it’s unclear if this is the reference her sister-in-law was making.

Oprah Winfrey’s full interview with Bobbi Kristina, Gary Houston and Patricia Houston will air during the special Oprah’s Next Chapter, on Sunday (March 11) at 9:00 p.m. ET. Before her death, Whitney had just wrapped filming on the film "Sparkle," starring with Jordin Sparks. The late singer was also at work on new music of her own.
