When we mentioned we were bringing Eskmo to the UK to a fellow music fanatic his answer was as emphatic: “About bloody time!” he said, and for good reason. Brendan Angelides, aka Eskmo, has been producing his idiosyncratic brand of syncopated electronic sound - somewhere between dubstep and hip-hop - for over a decade now. An output which has earned him a considerable following states-side, and the support from Planet Mu and Warp records, but which has largely, and inexplicably, escaped the UK’s attention. This however is bound to change with the release of his eponymous album on Ninja Tune in October.

Widely heralded within the community as one of the most original of a new wave of electronica artists Eskmo's tracks encompass a wide range of electronic styles: Bleep.com described his tracks as "Masterfully produced... sophisticated, post-Dilla hip-hop funk" while sites like Boomkat describe his music as "[Putting] Eskmo on his own electronic plateau." But maybe the greatest accolade of all, is Amon Tobin’s appreciation of his sound, an appreciation which culminated in a collaboration between both producers under the moniker Eskamon.

His live shows sees Eskmo embracing and exploring glitch, dubstep and R’n’B, and layering his own ethereal vocals into the dreamy mix. It’s a fine cocktail which accounts for everything that has made Eskmo such a whispered-about talent.

You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
