CD review: Heart On - Eagles of Death Metal

As far as side-projects go, Eagles of Death Metal have always come up trumps - and so it is again with their third album, Heart On, 1970s-inspired stoner rock.

This time there's no sighting of past members Jack Black, Mark Lanegan or Dave Grohl. Instead, the core duo of Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and Jesse Hughes have got together a new cast.

However, the message remains the same, as the band play to their strengths with tales of sleazy romance, such as in the fuzzy-boogie of Anything 'Cept the Truth, Prissy Prancin' and the scuzz-rock of I'm Your Torpedo, all of which are delivered on a wave of straight-faced humour.

From the Beck-like funk of Tight Pants to the unashamed honesty of Solo Flights ("Nobody does me like I do"), this is an album of high-octane fun, where bravado on the dance floor counts for everything.

The Eagles' world is one where no pun is too bad (just see the album title). Instead, it's about having the attitude to carry such antics off that counts for everything, and these guys certainly have that.

You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
