NEW YORK - Gov't Mule and Phish were among the winners at the Jammy Awards, but with dynamic performances from the String Cheese Incident, Solomon Burke (news), Susan Tedeschi and a reunion of Black Crowes brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, few may have noticed.

As usual, the musical lineup upstaged the awards at the fourth annual event Tuesday night, held at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The show, which celebrates the best live acts and jam artists, featured a wide variety of artists, including Edie Brickel, Slick Rick, the Harlem Gospel Choir, co-host Robert Randolph, Dickey Betts and the Derek Trucks Band.

Gov't Mule won the most awards at the event with two — best live album for "The Deepest End" and best live performance, which they shared with Les Claypool (news), Bela Fleck, Sonny Landreth (news).

"Making that record was one of the greatest musical moments in my life," said the band's frontman Warren Haynes.

Other winners were String Cheese Incident, Phish, and the Dave Matthews Band. Among the 12 categories included best DVD and best album art.

Gov't Mule's performance was perhaps the biggest highlight as Chris Robinson (news) reunited with brother Rich; Chris Robinson, who recently became a parent with actress-wife Kate Hudson (news), left the band two years ago for a solo career and Black Crowes went on hiatus.

But Robinson said there are no plans for a more substantial reunion.

"We have no future plans. We were both in town working on our records and we just thought it would be fun for the fans if we just went out and played a song," Robinson said in a statement Wednesday. "We truly just did it to have fun."

The evening ended with a lifetime achievement award for Steve Winwood (news) — the second honor of the week for Winwood. His band Traffic was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday.

That'd be a pretty cool show to be at... I have a lot of respect for improv artists... in a sense it seems like they have a more intimate relationship with the music they're playing... if that makes any sense.....

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
