What Are The Methods For Purifying Water?

Seven different methods are generally used to purify water:

1- Distillation:

the water is heated until evaporation, the vapor is then condensed and collected. Multi-effect distillation is a highly reliable technique intended to produce pyrogen-free water for the part of pharmaceutical processes. These are used to manufacture preparations for injections.

2- Demineralization:

It is a technique commonly used in the laboratory to produce purified water on demand. The water is passed over a resin made of styrene-based polymer beads. The anionic resin exchanges the anions for the OH- ion with distilled water machine. The cationic resin exchanges cations for the H + ion. The resin bed captures ions to remove inorganic substances. Since the feed water is pretreated, the saturation of the cartridges is much slower than a resin fed with raw water.

3- Reverse osmosis:

It is a technique that complements demineralization and distillation. The raw water is pumped through a pressure tube that contains a spiral membrane or a set of semi-permeable hollow fibers. The purified water passes through the membrane and forms the "permeate". Contaminants accumulate in the residual water called a "concentrate", which is continuously drained into the sewer.

4- Adsorption on activated carbon:

This technique removes chlorine by a catalytic process and eliminates dissolved organics by adsorption.

5- Microfiltration:

A 0.05 µm porosity membrane traps particulate contaminants such as bacteria and residues from organic absorption and demineralization cartridges. This membrane also filters out colloids.

6- Ultrafiltration:

A porous membrane, pore Ø 0.0001 to 0.2 µm, removes molecules with a molecular weight of 3000 to 10,000 Dalton. This membrane captures bacteria, pyrogens and organic molecules for biologically ultra-pure water.

7- Photo-oxidation (UV irradiation):

UV radiation at 185 nm degrades organic substances which are then captured by the ultrafilter and lower TOC. UV radiation at 254 nm limits bacterial proliferation to preserve bacteriological quality. The irradiation is either double 185/254 nm or single at 254 nm.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
