claptondad.jpgNo Kidding: Clapton a Dad at 59

Apparently hands are about the only slow thing on Eric Clapton.

The aging guitar god, whose rock peers are busy becoming grandfathers, is a father again at the age of 59. His wife, Melia McEnery, 29, gave birth to a daughter Tuesday in London.

Clapton's camp has not revealed the name or birth details of the newborn, but Britain's Sun quotes a source close to the singer saying, "Baby and mother are doing well. Eric was there for the delivery."

It's Clapton third child with McEnery and fifth overall. The couple, who married in a secret ceremony in 2002 after dating on and off for three years, also have two other daughters, 3-year-old Julie Rose and 2-year-old Ella Mae.

Clapton has an older daughter, Ruth, 19, by ex-paramour Yvonne Kelly. His only son, Conor, by Italian actress Lory Del Santo, died in a fall from a New York apartment building in 1991 at age 4. Clapton wrote the Grammy-winning hit song "Tears in Heaven" in the boy's honor.

Speaking of, Clapton has given permission for the tune to be rerecorded by an all-star lineup, including Elton John, Rod Stewart and Ozzy Osbourne, for tsunami relief efforts. Clapton himself was a headliner at a charity concert last month in Wales that also raised money for victims of the disaster.

Aside from his paternal duties, Clapton has been keeping plenty busy with his day job. The three-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and 16-time Grammy winner is working on a mini-reunion with his 1960s supergroup Cream set for May. He's also up for two Grammys on Feb. 13--Pop Collaboration with Vocals for his duet with Paul McCartney on "Something" from a George Harrison tribute concert, and Traditional Blues Album for last year's Me & Mr. Johnson.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
