  4. Miriam Christine releases new music video exclusively on the Internet by di-ve.com Monday, 27 September, 2004 Miriam Christine has released a music video to one of the tracks on her new album, 'Little Zee', exclusively on the Internet and you can see it here on di-ve.com. Talking about how the music video to the song 'Ain't Afraid' happened, Miriam Christine explained, "We thought Ain't Afraid would be a single when we were in the early stages of producing the album. When my husband and I went to Brazil we decided to take this song and the other planned single, "What We Really Mean', with us and shoot music videos of them. 'What We Really Mean' was released earlier this year, but we decided to release different songs afterwards and it seemed that the promo for 'Ain't Afraid' was never going to get seen. We then chose to release it through the Internet. The web is perfect for these special kind of releases." The video was filmed in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil's original capital. The unique qualities of the colonial city are captured in the production, and parts of the video were filmed in the same main square as Michael Jackson's promo to 'They Don't Care About Us'. You can see the video for 'Ain't Afraid' by . The album, 'Little Zee' is available from di-ve shop. Click here for more info. For more information log onto: www.miriamchristine.comClicking Here

  8. by Mauro Calleja Friday, 24 September, 2004 I met Matthew from Hysteric Maniacs and I felt I had to ask some of those cheeky questions; something you all want to hear...Hysteric Maniacs are now building a better name and will be with us introducing Lars Klein next 9th October. "Our aim is continuing to build up a better name because we are still commencing to organise events, this is just our second one," claims Matthew. "Lars Klein is one of my favorite artists...I really like his music, he's got his own style of producing music with melodic tunes to hard banging stuff. So as a promoter I really pass from hard times when some problems crop up out of nowhere namely events on the same day; problems with flights and accomodation for foreign DJs...That's why the things that worries me most is making a bad name, cause I'm here to have fun on the dancefloor with all the clubbers, and it's more than enthusiasm that drives me along. Everything we promise for sure, will be done. We don't like to fool around." Price of the event is important, the quality versus quantity aspect to consider. "Do you actually plan to make money, sincerely?" I dare ask. "As everybody knows the ticket price is Lm5.50 so if one stops just for a sec and starts thinking, I think it's good value for money: 3 live PAs, 9 local artists, 2 rooms, obviously Lars Klein, club hiring, decor and all other sound equipment...We don't want to make money from people but we want to have fun with people who really have a feel for techno music." "What about three techno events in a row starting tomorrow, Body Machine and Saturday after your event Hades' comes back? Is it greediness?" "Might be," Matthew answers ironically. "But I don't think Body Machine will effect that much since there is a two week distance between the events and neither Hades because it focuses on electro. Actually these are three quality events not be missed! So one advice, don't spend money on futile stuff that ruins the fun, just go and have fun listening, jumping and dancing with real quality music. Lars Klein will be our last event this year. Next year's plan will be continuing to give you the best of techno!" Please don't hesitate to send your feedback and comments on [email protected]
  9. by di-ve.com Friday, 24 September, 2004 The Maltasong Board has decided to reduce the televoting contribution to the final result to 40% instead of the before mentioned 50%. This decision was taken in an urgent meeting held yesterday afternoon, after it was noted that a number of finalists have used unauthorised ways to promote their songs. The Board has taken this decision because it is evident that this festival is not yet as popular as the Song for Europe Festival and people watching might be more influenced and hence the result be unobjective. The niche audience watching this festival, it is being assumed, is more directly related to the participants and subsequently this decision. Maltasong, in principle, still believes that the audience has a right to be represented and that their vote must be reflected in the result. Forty percent is still a significant representation and therefore it encourages all those who want to see Malta well represented in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest to use this vote to choose the one most deserving to represent us.

  13. by di-ve.com Sunday, 19 September, 2004 At the Venezia Film Festival held last week, one of the movies competing for the ''Leone d'Oro' included a song by none other than local band Beangrowers. The film in question is 'Land of Plenty' by the critically acclaimed and award-winning director Wim Wenders, best known for directing such films as Buena Vista Social Club, Wings of Desire, Alice in the Cities, and The Million Dollar Hotel. The Beangrowers track, entitled 'The Priest' is from their forthcoming third album. The film's soundtrack, distributed by Sony, also includes tracks from David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Travis. Commenting on this acheivement, Beangrowers singer Alison Galea stated: "We are very honoured to have been chosen by Wim Wenders to play a small but prestigious part in his latest work and to be included in the soundtrack. We're looking forward to watching the film at the cinema, waiting for that moment when our song will be heard. It's going to be so exciting!" Wim Wenders' career spans well over 30 years. In 1984, he won the Cannes Palme D'Or for Best Film with 'Paris, Texas'. Wenders has a long-standing passion for rock music. Says Wenders: 'My life was saved by Rock 'n Roll. It was this music that for the very first time in my life gave me a feeling of identity, the feeling that I had a right to enjoy, to imagine, and to do something. Had it not been for Rock'n Roll, I might be a lawyer now.'. He has worked with musical greats such as U2, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Ry Cooder, Daniel Lanois, Willie Nelson and Ronnee Blakley. Wim Wenders and U2 have collaborated many times - he shot a video for their contribution to the AIDS benefit album 'Red Hot and Blue', while they've contributed songs to his film 'The Million Dollar Hotel', for which Bono also wrote the story, after being inspired by a hotel in downtown L.A. during the filming of a music video. Making its premier at the Venezia Film Festival, 'Land of Plenty' is a portrait of a post-9/11 America gripped by paranoia and poverty. The German director's scathing film tells the story of a troubled Vietnam veteran obsessed with protecting the United States in the wake of the attacks and of a young religious missionary who works in the slums of Los Angeles. 'Land of Plenty' is not in any way an anti-American film," Wenders says about his movie. "It is a film that tries to deal with a lot of confusion and pain and paranoia." As a European outsider living in America he wanted to show how its values were being perverted and abused. But when pressed about what the reaction would be in the States, Wenders told Corriere della Sera newspaper: "Well, what do you want? Bush has convinced everyone that those who don't agree with him are anti-American." "The film is based on the hope that truth is not an altogether lost notion in today's political and social realities. Even in America, even in 2004," Wenders said. At the moment, Beangrowers are putting the finishing touches to their third album, entitled 'Dance Dance Baby' which will be released by the end of the year. On Friday 24 Septemebr they will be playing a concert ai Poxx Bar, while,on Thursday 30 they will be at the Lowenbrau Oktoberfest. 15. by Mauro Calleja Friday, 17 September, 2004 "Words can't really depict the impression Spacid has left on the crowd", explains Karl from Squadron, delightedly. "Being responsible for introucing new electro sounds in Malta when he performed last year, Spacid did it again! This time he managed to build his energetic 2:30hr set with different electro styles, ranging from minimal electro, italo disco to booty bass while including some cult tracks and classic scretching which constantly fueled the dancefloor." As usual 80s classic tracks including Blue Monday, but the one that fascinated me the most was a rave track "Don't miss the party line" by Bizz Nizz which he constantly filled the catchy main riff on a separate track. See, there is a classic and then there are different ones, the ones you long to hear for a long time, not because they aren't any good, but because you don't realize it would sound that good, of course in the perfect place at the perfect time. And this is Spacid's capability to impress. It was a minimal start for the first hour, then the progression and adrenalin sort of expanded immediately. Actually another success for Squadron. As seen from the dancefloor Spacid's set was impressively well met by the crowd. "Having also heard the comments of the crowd, they were all positive," Karl said. It seems we're heading into another confirmed night this December 4th featuring Dr Lektroluv so watch out this space in the following months for more details. Please don't hesitate to send your comments and feedback on [email protected] Official Squadron website: www.squadron.com.mt

On their return from Paris, Corkskrew will finish off work on their second CD album, which will be released in a few months time. The CD will mark the band's departure from a pop/electronica-sounding outfit to a more rock-oriented sound. Fans can follow up on Corkskrew's developments leading to the release of the first album single and CD release by logging on the band's official website www.corkskrew.net Meanwhile, Corkskrew will be performing live in Malta at the Indifest, Granaries (Fosos) Floriana on Friday 17 September. Corkskrew are supported by BoV Club, Air Malta, the Malta Tourism Authority and J&S Trading.
  19. by Mauro Calleja That is the question! Tuesday, 14 September, 2004 Edwin from Duo Blank explains both sides of the coin. Is computer and certain software regarded as a stand alone setup and the professional method to create music nowadays? "Thanks to the abundance in memory, disk space and processor capacity plus the availability of excellent sound cards, this is definitely the best and most cost effective method of professional music production especially for electronic music." But there's always another competitive argument against this. "Obviously analogue and sound purists with unlimited budgets would definitely think otherwise! However one can still say that all major studios worldwide utilise a computer or more as the main composition, sound recording and mastering tool." Upcoming producer Reuben Lee said that he received positive comments when performing with a computer but also heard people saying that live with a computer is for young kids, "I don't do what I do to build an image, but it's because I like to do it. Apart from that, Surgeon and Christian Wunsch performed with a computer in front of our eyes!" So in the light of this, is the era of hardware synths and drum machines history? Edwin continues that it will never happen especially in the live music and jamming environment... "even though we are currently assisting to the advent of the open synth which is basically a laptop running music software, a decent soundcard and a keyboard controller all bundled in one unit!" 21. Music-wise it is not very imp, but it provides good opportunities for the country(promotion) and might provide record contracts to some artists. People view it because they have a good laugh, and because you are supporting your country. Besides the obvious fact that countries all vote for their neighbours.
