Using email spoofing and forging invoices, contracts, and letters, the attackers managed to deceive Google, and Facebook employees, and even bank representatives, forcing them to make significant money transfers to their accounts (allegedly as payment for products and services). After receiving the money, funds were quickly withdrawn to other banks in six countries. Later digitalforensics.com reported that the funds were soon returned almost in full.
