Months after dropping his official debut The Greatest Story Never Told (after years of delay), Saigon is taking his music back into his own hands. And just like before, legendary producer Just Blaze is his copilot. The Brooklyn emcee used his Twitter account this weekend to announce that his latest mixtape Warning Shots 3: One Foot In The Grave with Just, will be available on January 24, 2012. “One Foot In The Grave is a f---ing MASTERPIECE. Just Blaze is the host. It’s a little different than Greatest Story Never Told. Some Yardfather sh--,” he tweeted, referring to his previous mixtape series. Saigon’s debut album Greatest Story Never Told, originally intended for release in 2007, finally hit stores this past February after being shelved by his previous label Atlantic Records. The album—which is entirely produced by Just Blaze and features guest appearances by the likes of Jay-Z, Q-Tip and Black Thought—was critically acclaimed, nabbing a number one slot on Metacritic’s “The Freshman 15,” a list of the highest-scoring debut albums of the year. “It felt good [to finally release the album]. It was redemption. By Tamara Palmer The world of music and the Bay Area hip-hop scene, in particular, lost a Special One this weekend. Karryl Smith, half of the East Oakland-bred group the Conscious Daughters, better known as Special One, passed away on December 10. Her cause of death is unknown at this time. As the Conscious Daughters, Smith and Carla Green (aka CMG) were a breakthrough act in the early Nineties, a pair of street-smart and fly ladies who rapped as relentlessly tough as any of their male counterparts. Buoyed by the singles “Somethin’ To Ride To (Fonky Expedition)” and “We Roll Deep,” the debut album Ear to the Street dropped in 1993 on Priority Records via Scarface Records, an imprint helmed by the politically charged rapper Paris. The album hit the Billboard Top 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop Top 25, and Gamers followed in 1996, with its’ title track affirming that women had considerable macking and sporting skills of their own. Paris also released the group’s third and final album The Nutcracker Suite on his Guerilla Funk label in 2009, praised for its balance of street hard tracks and female empowerment anthems. More recently, Smith and Green had departed the label and signed an agreement for their own company Llerrad Music to be distributed through Sony Red. CMG released a solo album, Jane of All Trades, in June, and the duo was getting ready to drop the fourth album from the Conscious Daughters. The stereotypical image of the female rapper in 2011 is hyper-sexualized and animated, but back in the Nineties, women such as the Conscious Daughters were allowed to be rugged, strong, and smooth and still be recognized for their lyrical talents and abilities. Carla Green posted a message regarding Smith's death on her Facebook page, writing, "Thank you to everyone for your prayers I need them. I am sick over the loss of my sister. The cause of death is still unknown but I will try to share info when I get it. Pray for me and Karryls other sisters Jessica and Tonya. By Tamara Palmer Like many other similar and tragic events in the hip-hop world, the murder of Mac Dre (born, Andre Hicks) has remained unsolved since the Bay Area rapper’s 2004 shooting death in Kansas City, Missouri. Though its legal credibility has yet to be verified, on Friday (December 9) the Kansas City Police Department was offered new information that one activist is convinced will help solve the murder case. In a statement obtained by MTV News, Kansas City writer Alonzo Washington announced that he planned to hold a press conference in front of the Downtown Kansas City Police Department. Washington was asked by an anonymous male informant on December 8 to be introduced to the police department and, if his unspecified “terms and conditions” are met, the informant will reveal the name of a new person who he believes killed Mac Dre. After Mac Dre’s murder, Washington campaigned for an anti-snitching “Hip to Give Tips” movement via flyers and writing articles. It unfortunately didn’t prevent what would later be perceived as a retaliatory killing when Kansas City rapper Fat Tone (Anthony Watkins) was murdered in Las Vegas in 2005. Washington convinced producers of the television series "America’s Most Wanted" to run a segment on suspected Watkins killer Andre Dow (also known as Mac Minister), and the national exposure ultimately led to Dow’s capture in San Francisco and a murder conviction. “Mr. Washington is very excited about closing this murder case because it caused so many people to be killed behind rumors and hip-hop speculations,” reads the statement. Whether or not this proves to be the information that cracks the mystery, at least there might be some new motion in trying to solve the case of who silenced a talented artist far before his time.
