1. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy Nicki Minaj has released the highly-anticipated music video for "Stupid Hoe," the new single from her forthcoming album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Helmed by director Hype Williams, the colorful and frenetic video depicts a very flexible Nicki outfitted in colorful wigs with pastel-hued makeup and oft-buggy eyes. An anthem to her female haters, the voluptuous rapper bounces and jiggles about and even throws in some falsetto singing in the end (as a real life doll) for good measure. "These bitches is my sons and I don't want custody!" Nicki growls, ferociously. "I am the female Weezy!" Shots fired indeed. Nicki's longtime partner and hype man Safaree Samuels makes a cameo in the video as does an exotic leopard, which a caged Nicki transforms into. Meow! Nicki took to Twitter to retweet and thank a barrage of fans for supporting the new video via the #StupidHoe hashtag. Fans lauded her makeup and creativity with sentiment like: "Your best video so far!" "NEW VIDEO IS PERFECTION," and "You just slayed my whole entire f---ng life!" Nicki's sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is slated for a February 14, 2012 release. She will perform at the 2012 Grammys (she is nominated for four statuettes including Best New Artist where she'll face off against Bon Iver, Skrillex, J. Cole and the Band Perry) and then launch an international promo tour with stops in London, Paris, Berlin, and Tokyo. 3. AP - On her last album The Dreamer, released just three months before her death, Etta James sings a mix of covers, from the RB classic Misty Blue to the Ray Charles song In the Evening. A new shot of Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins shows him looking a bit more kid-friendly than we came to think of the character in the cult TV series, but we're still digging the look. Up until now, the images we've seen from the film have seemed to imply that Burton was taking a darker route, but could it be that "Dark Shadows" will have kid-friendly components as well? We'll just have to wait for the first trailer to get a better sense of what the movie has in store. When MTV News caught up with Chloe Moretz at the People's Choice Awards, she argued that "Dark Shadows" would play to both younger and older crowds because of the way it brings together Burton-lovers and fans of the old TV show. "I think also it's open to the older group that actually saw the TV show back in the 1970s," she said. "And also the new group that love Tim Burton, and they love supernatural movies and TV shows." Moretz added, "I think it's a really revolutionary movie." "Dark Shadows" stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Moretz and Gulliver McGrath. It's due in theaters on May 11. 8. (Beyonce in "Cadillac Records") By Jocelyn Vena Beyonce has been busy tending to baby Blue Ivy Carter but the singer made time to post a note on her website today, saying farewell to legendary blues singer Etta James who died on Friday (January 20) at the age of 73. The two songstresses have a bit of history, thanks to Beyonce's portrayal of James in the 2008 film "Cadillac Records." "This is a huge loss. Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen," Beyoncé wrote on her blog. "Her musical contributions will last a lifetime. Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist. When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter. She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed." Photos: The life and career of Etta James. B famously portrayed the blond jazz singer in the 2008 biopic "Cadillac Records." Her version of "At Last" from the film's soundtrack would later win a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance. Beyoncé's version of James' iconic ballad once-again made headlines when she performed the track at President Obama's inaugural ball in 2009. The performance was initially met with some criticism from the always-outspoken James, but she later came around. Beyoncé is the latest in a long line of celebrities paying tribute to James. "Showing respect, appreciation and love for all the wonderful music and joy #ettajames brought to the world...#ettajamesforever," Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am wrote on Twitter. Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams recalled how James' music influenced her. "#EttaJames, I will be forever grateful for your voice and your soul. Rest in peace." Rapper Flo Rida — whose latest hit, "Good Feeling," samples James' "Something's Got a Hold on Me" — wrote, "I'm deeply saddened by the passing of the Great Etta James and I will be forever grateful for the gift she Blessed me with." 9. By Kevin Kelly Sundance has long been known for its artsy films. That's all fine and dandy, but what about the geek side of movies? Where is the spirit of independent filmmaking when it comes to our world? Thankfully, Sundance has been slowing addressing that problem. Over the years they have premiered films like "Primer," "Moon," "Splice," and "Another Earth," that scratched a bit of that itch. The demanding film buff wants more genre out of this snowbound film festival, and Sundance is finally starting to deliver. The 2012 Sundance Film Festival has a lot to offer in science fiction, horror, and beyond. Check out our genre highlights. »Beasts of the Southern Wild The Story: A six-year-old girl named Hushpuppy prepares the for the departure of her father. When he falls ills, the world literally does too. Prehistoric animals appear, and the climate changes. Why We're Excited: "Beasts of the Southern Wild" has its own universe, uses non-actors and prehistoric animals, so it's like Wes Anderson at the dawn of mankind. Sounds pretty amazing. With characters named Wink and Hushpuppy, it's also very skewed from center. We're in. »Four Suns The Story: A man facing maturity for the first time tries to find a spiritual master with his oddball, mystic friend coming along to show him the way. Why We're Excited: Mystic stones? A spiritual journey? It's not the newest "Elfstones of Shannara" storyline, but it's over the geek line enough to fall into fantasy. Definitely on our radar. »Grabbers The Story: In this Irish monster movie, the only weapon that can fight the creatures from beyond the deep is by getting drunk. Very, very drunk. Why We're Excited: Whenever Sundance tells us to grab a drink, we know something special is about to happen. Fighting monsters through getting drunk? That sounds like the best monster movie ever made, and is bound to become a cult drinking phenomenon. »John Dies At The End The Story: When a new drug that separates the mind from the body starts hitting the streets and affecting mankind, two college dropouts have to make a stand. Why We're Excited: An out of body drug experience coupled with Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown by the director of Bubba Ho-Tep? This was made for geeks, plain and simple. »Red Lights The Story: Two paranormal investigators disprove skeptics and hoaxes for a living, but when a legendary psychic appears after 30 years, their beliefs are shaken to the core. Why We're Excited: Paranormal horror with Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, and Robert De Niro sounds perfect. Cortés' "Buried" was a terrific character study with one actor locked in a box for the entire film, so it will be nice to see what Cortés can do with a full cast. »Robot and Frank The Story: When elderly Frank gets a caretaker robot, he hesitates to embrace it. But things take a turn for the weird when he starts using it to plan heists and to woo the local librarian. Why We're Excited: "Frank Langella and a robot" kind of sounds like a highbrow version of "Short Circuit," but anything that involves an actor of his caliber and a robot is in the middle of geek alley. Done. »Safety Not Guaranteed The Story: A personal ad in a paper seeks fellow time-travelers, and three magazine employees are sent to investigate. It's a romantic comedy full of misfits, and the possibility of time travel. Move over, McFly. Why We're Excited: With time travel, Aubrey Driver, Mark Duplass and Jake M. Johnson, we have no choice but to get excited. »Black Rock The Story: Three women go for a girl's night out reunion on a remote island in Maine. Of course, something goes wrong. It always does! Why We're Excited: Are the Duplass Brothers just taking over Sundance again? Mark wrote this script, and his wife Katie is directing it and starring in it. They might just depose Parker Posey as the darling of Sundance. »Excision The Story: Pauline is a weird girl with a taste for the macabre, and when she decides to lose her virginity, things take a turn for the very weird. Why We're Excited: It has horror, gore, and AnnaLynne McCord. This is a Sundance Midnight Movie, all right. »Room 237 The Story: This film puts forth the theory that secret messages were hidden by Stanley Kubrick in "The Shining." Sure, there have been crazier theories, but this one is up there. Why We're Excited: A documentary about hidden message in "The Shining" sounds like a film buff's dream version of "The Da Vinci Code." »The Pact The Story: Annie arrives home to her old house after her mother's funeral and discovers that the house is haunted. Why We're Excited: Haunted houses, clairvoyants, cops, and Casper Van Dien? Sounds like a film that needs to be investigated. We just hope it doesn't haunt us. »V/H/S The Story: A group of criminals try to find a rare piece of found footage in a rundown house full of bizarre VHS cassettes, which in real life were all created by different horror directors. Why We're Excited: This mash-up of directors delivering horror might be a perfect return to the anthology movies we love. »The Raid The Story: The director of "Merentau" returns with a new martial arts film featuring an impregnable building that has to be broken into. Think the corridor scene from "Oldboy," times ten. Why We're Excited: Who says action films don't have a place at Sundance? Evans' "Merentau" was so terrific that all you have to do is mention his name in conjunction with martial arts, and we're sold. 23. By Rob Markman 50 Cent has been fighting a very public battle with his label Interscope records over the release of his much delayed fifth studio album, and despite a recent Twitter rant in which he claimed that he would stop supporting his own music, the G-Unit CEO already has plans for his sixth album. "This time I'm not sure if I'll tour the world like I did on my last project, 'cause it makes my album cycle two years long," 50 told Forbes in a video interview. " "I think I'd like to launch this record and come right back and launch another record following it." 50 Cent Apologizes To Interscope After Venting On Twitter Releasing this fifth album has been a constant battle for 50. The rapper blasted Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre last summer, but later calmed his angst and made peace. Earlier this month, 50 took to Twitter and once gain blasted Interscope after a song slated for his album leaked onto the Internet. "I have lost all faith in the team I'm on," he wrote. A few days later he backed down. "Discovered a computer glitch leaked my song," 50 tweeted on January 8. "Sorry to team at Interscope for over reacting!" 50 Cent Wants To Cut Ties With Interscope Records Whatever the holdup, there has been a noticeable gap between Fif's retail releases. His last album, Before I Self Destruct, hit shelves in November 2009 and the Queens MC has amassed so many songs since then that he has enough for two projects. "It's been three years since my last album, so I've recorded so much material that I'm really excited about trying to get those ideas to the general public so they get a chance to hear it and appreciate it," he said. What do you hope to hear from 50 Cent's much-anticipated fifth album? Let us know in the comments!
