1. Television was the priority, but the Monkees still made a lasting impression on pop music. The band's string of hits between 1966 and 1968 may have initially cashed in on Beatlemania, but the songs have long transcended novelty status, no doubt due in part to the fact that the Monkees' albums drew from expert pop craftsmen such as Carole King, Neil Diamond and the songwriting duo of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. With the news today that Monkees frontman Davy Jones had died, Pop & Hiss takes a look at the band's enduring influence on the generations that followed. "The Monkees," a TV series heavily influenced by the whimsical nature of the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night," first aired in September 1966, and the music from those shows soon crossed over to the pop charts. The members of the Monkees long fought to correct the perception that they were little more than puppets, though their first few singles featured little more than the group's voices over other artists' songs and instrumentation. Those early hits included the Boyce & Hart cut "Last Train to Clarksville" and Diamond's "I'm a Believer." The Monkees, which also featured Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith (who was considered the serious musician of the group) and Micky Dolenz, saw its show declining in popularity by early 1968. Yet during that short run, the Monkees had toured with Jimi Hendrix and put one of the first-ever uses of the Moog synthesizer on record with the song “Daily Nightly.” PHOTOS: Davy Jones: Dec, 30, 1945-Feb. 29, 2012 Jones was primarily an actor until his Monkees role as frontman turned him into a teen idol. As the face of the group, Jones led the evolution of the Monkees from a TV show creation to a notable part of '60s pop culture. Below, a look at some of the artists, including Run-DMC and the Sex Pistols, who tackled songs made famous by the Monkees. Run-DMC, "Mary, Mary." Included on the 1967 album "More of the Monkees," this was one of the earlier songs written by Nesmith. Rap group Run-DMC revived the song in the late '80s, changing the lyrics but crediting Nesmith and sampling the original. While the Monkees were more concerned with where Mary was heading (it was away from the Monkees), Run-DMC asked, 'Mary, Mary, why ya buggin'?" The Sex Pistols, "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone." This Boyce & Hart song had earlier appeared on an album by Paul Revere & the Raiders, and the Monkees' version was sung by Dolenz. The song has proved, however, to be one of the era's more covered songs. It was turned into a minimalistic dance tune by the Farm, and became a punk anthem in the hands of the Pistols. Smash Mouth, "I'm a Believer." The Diamond-written cut reached the top of the pop charts for the Monkees and has since been reclaimed by its original songwriter. While the above version was a movie tie-in with "Shrek," it's equally silly and surreal. Smash Mouth's youthful exuberance matches that of the Monkees, and the '90s band adds a little garage rock efficiency and surf rock weirdness. Not a fan? Check out the more dreamy take from Robert Wyatt. Just avoid the EMF edition. Cassandra Wilson, "Last Train to Clarksville" The Monkees' first hit, presented here by jazz vocalist Wilson. The ultra-clear instrumentation tends to veer into smooth-rock sleepiness, a feeling that's accentuated in this version by the mellowing sax from David Sanborn. Trouble, "Porpoise Song" As the Monkees phenomena was drawing to a close, the band let viewers in on its bizarre side with "Head," a 1968 film co-written and co-produced with Jack Nicholson. While odd, it was viewed as wildly inconsistent with the group's TV image and threw teenage fans for a loop. Nevertheless, this song, originally written by Gerry Goffin and his then-partner King, was a dreamy, slow-moving trip with enveloping harmonies and dizzying keys. It also works surprisingly well as a metal song. U2, "Daydream Believer." Covered often by U2 during it gloriously off-kilter mid-'90s period, the song was regularly played during shows from the 1997 PopMart tour. A giant wink toward the consumerist culture it was taking advantage of, U2's version of "Daydream Believer" was presented as a crowd-sing-along led by the Edge. In the video above, Jones joins U2 in Los Angeles. Ocean's debut album is due this year, and it is much anticipated after his collaborations with Jay-Z and Kanye West on their "Watch the Throne" album. "American Wedding" originally appeared on Ocean's debut mixtape, 'nostalgia,ULTRA', which last year was re-released by Def Jam, and Ocean has frequently performed it live. But on his blog today, Ocean said:
[i]"Don henley is apparently intimidated by my rendition of Hotel California..He threatened to sue if I perform it again. The French-Canadian songbird has been ordered to rest her voice for six to eight weeks. She was intially thought to be well enough to take the stage again Saturday, but she won't be able to resume performances until June 9, she announced on her website Tuesday. "I tried to sing at my sound check last week, and I had no control of my voice whatsoever," Dion said in a statement. "We thought that after a few days' rest I would improve, but it wasn't getting any better." It was previously announced that Dion would shutter shows through March 3. The singer was diagnosed with a viral illness and weakness in her right vocal cord during an examination at UCLA Medical Center on Monday. Dion began her three-year residency at Caesars last March, with tickets going as high as $250 a pop. In a Times feature previewing the show, it was reported that nearly 1 million tickets were expected to be sold during the show’s three-year run. The casino spent $95 million building the Colosseum to house Dion's production in 2003. Her previous run at Caesars Palace, "A New Day," drew 3 million customers from 138 countries between 2003 and 2007, sold out 723 times and grossed more than $400 million. After the five-year run, she went on a world tour before taking time off for family, giving birth to twin boys in 2010. Tickets for the canceled performances will be refunded. Dion's next run of performances is scheduled from June 9 to Aug. 19. Jackson died in June 2009. During the chat, Paris allegedly played one of the songs from the disc, the Akon-produced "Hold My Hand," when one of her friends asked the 13-year-old if it was really her father. "It's not him ... the whole album isn't even him!! Go online ... go on YouTube and look up Jason Malachi. That's him," Paris Jackson says, according to TMZ. "I should know if it's him or not because he would sing to me all the time." Jackson’s reported comment will surely reignite claims that “Michael” was largely completed by Malachi, a well-known MJ sound-alike. When Sony released the first offering from the disc, a jarring kiss-off to the tabloids that preyed on his eccentricities called “Breaking News,” the song was immediately met with controversy from fans debating just how much of Jackson they were hearing on the track. It was reported that the singer's children and his own mother, Katherine Jackson, had questioned the authenticity of his voice on a number of tracks, including “Breaking News,” which Michael Jackson reportedly recorded in 2007 at a friend's New Jersey home. Sony Records released a statement saying it had "complete confidence in the results of our extensive research as well as the accounts of those who were in the studio with Michael that the vocals on the new album are his own." TJ Jackson, the son of Jackson's brother Tito, took to Twitter to argue that the song was a sham and that fans should be wary. "There's many MJ vocal impersonators. Some better than others. But there is only ONE Michael Jackson. Deceptively merging shady vocals with MJ samples (from prior MJ records) will never fool me," he tweeted after the song's release. Sony Records and Jackson's estate continued to deny the claims and said the songs were newly completed recordings from the legend's vast unreleased archives. "Unbeknownst to many fans around the world, [Jackson] was writing and recording songs continuously everywhere from a friend’s home in New Jersey to studios in Las Vegas and Los Angeles with a small group of handpicked collaborators," read a statement regarding the album's release. "Now, through the unique stories that will be told about the songs that comprise 'Michael,' fans will get mind-blowing insight into how this artist worked and a chance to hear the songs he most recently created along with tracks that Michael had a desire to bring to fruition."' The band performed many of its string of hits, including "I'm a Believer," "Last Train to Clarksville" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday." 17. In the liner notes to Bruce Springsteen's new album 'Wrecking Ball," which arrives Tuesday, amid the lyrics, line-up, thank-yous and production notes is a tiny-fonted paragraph listing the non-Boss recordings and songs that Springsteen and producer Ron Aniello either sampled or quoted on the record. Bruce Springsteen, sample king? It's not the descriptor that most would use when discussing the artist, but, according to the notes, Springsteen references no less than five other songs within his 18th album, ranging from funk vocalist Lyn Collins to Curtis Mayfield to the Alabama Sacred Heart Convention and a few different Alan Lomax-directed field recordings from the 1940s and '50s. He employs the sound of an AK-47 firing, and even swipes a chunk of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." (Alas, he doesn't use the classic "Apache" break.) On the surface, the Boss' curiosity about cut-and-paste culture might come as a surprise; he is, after all, an American songwriter born and raised within the pure tradition of original musical storytelling. But Springsteen has long quoted others' music within his own, beginning with the first song on his second record, "The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle," whose "The E Street Shuffle," is an acknowledged riff on Major Lance's 1960 hit "The Monkey Time." Too, he loves peppering his set with a good cover song, and is quick to list influences and inspirations when discussing his craft. Judging by the list of samples for "Wrecking Ball," he dug into the well of American music during the construction of the record. Below, some of Springsteen's quotes and samples. Lyn Collins, 'Me and My Baby Got Our Own Thing Going' Lyn Collins' 1972 funk jam "Me and My Baby Got Our Own Thing Going" was produced by James Brown and written by Collins along with Brown, Fred Wesley and Charles Bobbitt. Springsteen references it on the third track on "Wrecking Ball," called "Shackled and Drawn." Alabama Sacred Harp Convention, "The Last Words of Copernicus" On "Death to My Hometown," the Irish-tinted jam on "Wrecking Ball," Springsteen dips back to the world of sacred harp singing, and a 1959 Alan Lomax-recorded version of the hymn "The Last Words of Copernicus." The thrilling whirlwind of voices serves as choral accompaniment during the chorus of Springsteen's song. Church of God in Christ Congregation, "I'm a Soldier in the Army of the Lord" This hymn has been used over the years as a patriotic anthem for religious zealots looking to justify any number of causes (see the Bible quotes in the video above for examples), and it's easy to see why: its aggression is unapologetic. Springsteen uses a raucous Lomax-recorded version in his song "Rocky Ground," which draws from the stories of the Bible for its lyrics -- and features a 16-bar mid-song rap (!) by singer Michelle Moore. Yes, there is a rap verse in a Bruce Springsteen song. Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, "People Get Ready" Curtis Mayfield's classic song "People Get Ready" plays a major role in "Land of Hope and Dreams," the seven-minute rocker that appears second on "Wrecking Ball." In fact, the song virtually becomes "People Get Ready" after an epic Clarence Clemons tenor solo. Johnny Cash, "Ring of Fire" The final song on the 11-track "Wrecking Ball" begins as an acoustic number that then transforms into a mid-tempo, banjo-led charge featuring a whistled version of "Ring of Fire." The song at times sounds a little bit like an Ennio Morricone spaghetti western theme, especially at the end, when the "Ring of Fire" melody takes hold as a guitar line. It's an electro pop type track that will definitely please the ears and have you hitting play over and over just to hear it again. I personally would like to hear some more remixed versions including an extended club version for the DJs -- and because I always like a remix! This single is already getting airplay on Y100 in Miami, FL and requests are buzzing from what I hear! <iframe id="hulkshare-player-embed" name="hulkshare-player-embed" src="http://www.hulkshare.com/embed_mp3.php?fn=19jqzppubi2d&bg=000000&fg=71C90C" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true" style="width:100%;height:49px;"></iframe> Connect: Twitter: [twitter]WhoIsEchoFoster[/twitter] Twitter: [twitter]LogicMC[/twitter] Facebook: https://www.facebook...WhoIsEchoFoster Youtube: http://www.youtube.c.../EchoFosterVevo
 21. In 2010 a conglomerate of record labels – including the ‘Big Four’ of Sony, EMI, Warner and Universal – went after BitTorrent site isoHunt. The site and its owner are accused of facilitating copyright infringement on a massive scale. Through the lawsuit the labels hope to shut down the isoHunt website while receiving over 4 million dollars in punitive damages to compensate for their claimed losses. “The isoHunt Websites have been designed and are operated by the defendants with the sole purpose of profiting from rampant copyright infringement which defendants actively encourage, promote, authorize, induce, aid, abet, materially contribute to and commercially profit from,” the labels wrote in their complaint. This week isoHunt’s Gary Fung filed a response to the accusations. Turning the tables Fung argues that it’s not isoHunt but the record labels that are the real threat. The labels are waging war on the Internet and trying to restrict basic human rights by trying to shut down file-sharing services, Fung says. “In our latest response to CRIA filed in Court, we ask the Supreme Court to adjudicate this crucial issue of balance between the constitutional rights of people on the Internet to communicate, share and search, versus the rights of copyright industries to limit such rights in the corporate interest of protecting and extending copyright,” Fung tells TorrentFreak. “isoHunt urges the court to examine this issue carefully, for the sake of innovations on the Internet, free exchange of culture, and fundamental constitutional freedoms.” In the pleading isoHunt explains how BitTorrent works and notes that isoHunt’s role in the downloading process is relatively small. The site positions itself as a neutral technology platform that merely indexes .torrent files stored across hundreds of websites on the Internet. As such, they are not promoting, authorizing or encouraging copyright infringement, they claim. isoHunt argues that the record labels and other copyright industries are trying to systematically shut down these neutral file-sharing systems. Thereby, they breach basic human rights such as the right to freedom of expression. “Freedom of expression on the Internet is under attack. From SOPA in the US, ACTA internationally, and C-11 in Canada, the same theme is apparent on the agenda of copyright industry groups: instead of dealing with actual copyright violators, they want to shut down technologies and internet services that they say will be used by violators,” Fung told TorrentFreak. “It’s the same alarmist approach that goes back to the VCR and the radio. As the Internet emerges as the de-facto medium of communication, sharing and expression, the control over distribution by copyright industries is threatened. In turn, the constitutional freedom of expression of Canadians and all participants on the Internet is threatened.” With this case in Canada and the US case against the MPAA, isoHunt is at the forefront of the legal censorship debate in Northern America. Both cases are crucial for the future of file-sharing related services and are expected to set an important precedent. Fung is determined to take the cases as far as possible to defend people’s rights and the open Internet, a battle that is expected to last for years.
