The local IAMSOUND Records is the latest to land a big like-minded signing: The independent label will release the U.S. debut EP from Londoner Charli XCX in May. Charli XCX singles such as "Nuclear Seasons" owe debts to Blondie and goth-edged darkwave and should fit nicely alongside IAMSOUND's other adventurous synth acts such as Salem and Little Boots. The label helped launch the careers of international star Florence and the Machine and the globe-skipping rock group Fool's Gold. An e-mail from the label said a full track list, artwork and samples of new music were coming soon; her two shows at this month's South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, are some of the most anticipated. 3. Reuters - RB singer Chris Brown will release his fifth studio album titled Fortune in May, record label RCA said on Thursday, following on from Brown's recent Grammy comeback performance and award win. 4. Chris Brown is currently swaddled in enough controversy that a new headline surprises no one, but for those into the music, this is the kind of news that matters: The embattled singer has announced that his new album, “Fortune” will hit stores May 8. “Fortune” is led by the sticky electro-romp “Turn Up the Music,” which Brown performed at the 54th Grammy Awards last month. He also took home his first Grammy at that show, winning the R&B album trophy for “F.A.M.E.” When he previewed “F.A.M.E.” to reporters at Record Plant Studios in Hollywood early last year, Brown revealed that he planned for the disc and “Fortune” to serve as a double album. With a slate of sexually explicit grooves and supercharged backbeats rooted in dubstep, R&B, gritty hip-hop and pop, "F.A.M.E." returned Brown to radio prominence after his personal life had threatened to eclipse his career. From what we’ve sampled, “Fortune” pushes those sounds even further. Last week, “Turn Up The Music” debuted at No. 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart; its video, the singer’s directorial debut, garnered more than 8 million views within its first week on Vevo. The last few weeks would make the perfect pilot for a reality series -- it could even take its title from Chris Rock’s sitcom, “Everybody Hates Chris.” First, Brown became a trending topic on Twitter during the Grammys, as there was furor over the Recording Academy inviting the singer to perform (twice), three years after his assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna, and then rewarded him with a win. Then, more than a week after the telecast, Brown released two collaborations with Rihanna, even while he's still serving five years' probation after pleading guilty to assaulting her. No word if the Rihanna-assisted remix of "Turn Up the Music" made the final track list for "Fortune." And then, there’s that baffling (or asinine, depending on whom you ask) report that he allegedly grabbed a female fan's cellphone after she snapped a picture of him leaving a Miami nightclub late last month. Brown hasn’t been charged with a crime; if he were, and he was then convicted, that would be one nasty parole violation that could land him behind bars. Messy personal woes aside, Brown’s music continues to thrive: “Turn Up The Music” is currently No. 1 on the iTunes R&B/soul charts in more than a dozen countries (one of two singles in the top 10), and the album’s buzz single, “Strip,” sits at No. 3 on Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart. So, maybe controversy really does sell? “Fortune” will serve as Brown's debut release with RCA Records, after a restructuring led to the disbandment of Jive Records in October. 12. Traditionally, Spain has been one of the few countries where courts have affirmed that P2P-sites operate legally. This situation was met with disapproval by the United States Government who behind closed doors proceeded to help the Spanish authorities draft new laws to protect the interests of copyright holders. Threatened with being put on a United States trade blacklist, the Government passed the so-called ‘Sinde Law’ in a rush late last year. The law allows for the blocking of allegedly infringing sites based on reports from copyright holders, a position similar to that proposed by the US SOPA bill. Today the Sinde law went into effect and immediately it was met with resistance from opponents. The group Hackivistas was quick to organize a rather unique form of protest. They encouraged sites to link to a copyrighted track from the artist Eme Navarro, who’s a member of the music rights group SGAE, but critical of the Sinde law. While Navarro generally publishes his music under a Creative Commons license, he created an “all rights reserved” track specifically for the protest. Thanks to the hacktivist campaign hundreds of websites are now linking to this copyrighted song without permission, and Navarro reported a first batch of sites to the Ministry of Culture early this morning. As a result, the commission tasked with reviewing all the requests will be overloaded with complaints. All the reported sites have to be processed on order of arrival, so the protest will significantly slow down this review process. Navarro delivering the complaints “The aim of this action is testing this law and being the first ones who use it in order to show the absurdity and the censorship that it will bring,” the hacktivists say commenting on their action. The sites participating in the campaign do risk being blocked by Internet providers, but according to the law they have to be notified about the alleged infringement first. Then they get the chance to remove the infringing link to avoid being blocked. Besides from the “sabotage” angle, another goal of the protest is to find out how the takedown process works. Right now there is still much uncertainty about how the commission will operate and how websites will eventually be blocked, a Hacktivistas member told TorrentFreak. “Nobody knows how they will shut down websites. We suspect that they will ask Spanish companies hosting the websites to shut them down, and that Spanish service providers will block websites that are hosted outside of Spain.” “They will also censor foreign websites, so anyone in the world can join us. We want to check what happens in every case,” the hacktivist added. Joining the protest is easy, websites can add a link to the infringing track through a simple piece of code provided on the campaign website. Just make sure not to ask Eme Navarro for permission. 16. I just helped a major group get their work done quicker. I think this calls for some PS3 !

 17. The band !!! (a.k.a. "Chk Chk Chk") has plenty of justifiable reasons for being excited about a West Coast tour in the middle of winter. First, unlike their current home base in Brooklyn, we barely even get winter here. Second, their quick stint of club dates up and down the coast is affording the Sacramento-bred band time to test out new material for an album they’ll be recording in March. Since forming in 1996, the band's crowd-pleasing brand of dance-punk has landed them on just about every major festival stage from Coachella and Bonaroo to Spain’s Primavera Sound. But in the spirit of testing a new crop of unreleased songs, the band has decided to give fans an intimate round of shows for their quick-hitting “Caliiifornia” tour. And despite the perceived difficulty of fitting a spastically energetic six-piece band on a small club stage, front man Nic Offer says !!! is definitely an act that can rock on all terrain. “People always ask us how we’re able to fit our show on small stages," Offer said. "But through the ups and downs of our careers, and being all the way at the bottom, we’ve been able to play anywhere.” More important, this four-date outing between Santa Barbara and San Diego from Feb. 28 to March 2 offers their raw, sweat-drenched club music a chance to thrive in its natural habitat. Before Thursday's show at the Echoplex, Offer spoke with Pop & Hiss about their forthcoming record steeped in a mixture of unapologetic electro, rough-and-tumble rock guitars and a newfound work ethic inspired by Prince. Pop & Hiss: Having played so many huge festival stages in the last few years, what does it feel like to be playing your music in a club where it really seems to be most at home, stylistically? Nic Offer: We kind of like it all. It’s exciting playing the bigger stages, but when you’re at a club and the people are just right there in your face, the energy is just more compacted. Taking the energy of a huge stage and putting it in a small room makes it all the more explosive. Everyone that was at the show last night who came up to us was like, “Oh, I saw you at Coachella and this was so much better.” I think people are just blown away by something that intimate. It’s more exciting. How do you determine on stage what new songs you really want to keep? Does it just depend on the audience reaction? I’m looking for applause. You can tell right at the end of a song whether or not the audience got that one. You can see the songs take over. People may not respond to it at first, but then as the build happens or a chord change happens, you can see the change in the crowd as well. That’s what I’ve always really liked about dance music. Everything else can be kind of fishy in terms of what blogs or websites get behind a band. But on a dance floor, if it ain’t happening, it ain’t happening. People will just walk off the floor if they don’t like it. If you can see they’re not dancing, you’ve just have to make that beat funkier. You’ve also been working in a cool Prince cover of "Extraloveable" into your sets. Are there any plans to cover more songs for the album or are there any songs you’re dying to cover live? We’ve recorded a couple Prince songs but we’re not sure when they’re coming out. We recorded "Extraloveable" and "Irresistible Bitch." We’re not really performing them on this tour, just because we have so many new tunes, even ones we want to play but can’t really get to. Where are you planning to record? We’re doing the bulk of it in Texas, recording with the drummer from Spoon, Jim Eno. We were always fans of theirs. They’re not really dance music per se, but they’ve always had an original sound and the songs have always had a lot of space in them which is really important for dance music. And we feel we still have more to learn there. And we called him up and got a hold of him, hung out and decided to try out the recording with him. Is there any pressure to get another record out, considering the three-year gap between all of your albums so far? We usually just try to do it until it’s done. But we also realized that sometimes you’re just not doing it enough and you could work harder. This record will hopefully come out sooner than the other ones. We wrote the whole thing in a year so our goal is to continue that pace. Musicians by nature are lazy sometimes and we’ve been spending the last year or so being really inspired by Prince and how hard he works. Everyone always comments about how talented he is but people often overlook how hard he works. He already had “Around The World in a Day” done by the time "Purple Rain" was just coming out. So we just try to push ourselves and work harder. !!! Ocean's song, relased on his debut mixtape "nostalgia, ULTRA," which Def Jam re-released last year, heavily sampled from The Eagles' "Hotel California" and riffed on the song's famous melody. Ocean said that he thought Henley was "intimidated" by his take on the song, and found the whole dustup "awesome." We reached Larry Solters, the spokesman for Irving Azoff's Front Line Management (which handles the Eagles), for comment. In an email, which he said was "all the lawyers would let me say," he offered The Eagles' take on the matter. The underlines were included in the original:
Frank Ocean did not merely “sample” a portion of the Eagles’ Hotel California; he took the whole master track, plus the song’s existing melody, and replaced the lyrics with his own. This is not creative, let alone “intimidating.” It’s illegal. For the record, Don Henley has not threatened or instituted any legal action against Frank Ocean, although the Eagles are now considering whether they should. Any further questions regarding this matter should be directed to Warner Music Group as it is the entity that currently owns the master recording and made the contact with Frank Ocean’s representatives concerning his infringement of the master recording.
We're reaching out to Ocean's reps, Def Jam and Warner Music Group for further comment about whether or not this sample was officially cleared and what effect it may have on the commercial release of "nostalgia, ULTRA." That's the day Facebook will flip the layout switch on all of its "Pages" -- the identities created for all non-person entities -- to its Timeline format. This will de-emphasize the scrolling "wall" of posts and status updates in favor of the more graphic-intensive and topically organized new layout. For musicians, it presents a significant change that might not be so welcome. Timeline prohibits a band from using popular third-party apps like BandPage, FanBridge, ReverbNation as their landing page. Many acts used those features, as they allowed a curious fan's first encounter with a band's page to be a posted video, an email sign-up list, streaming tracks or other features. Those apps, while still available, will now be accessible only via a secondary tab. The wide range of second-party apps did lend a certain scattershot MySpace-ness to the layout of Facebook's music sites, and the new format is a step toward uniformity and away from a band's ability to choose how to present itself. Timeline does offer some useful features, like the ability to have a post top your Timeline for a week. Whether the switch is a step toward a more enjoyable experience for users, or a blow to a band's control over its Facebook presence, is to be determined. But for now, if you're a band and still attached to your Wall, start saying your final valedictions. 23. In the hours after the death on Wednesday of singer Davy Jones, Bob Rafelson spoke glowingly on Wednesday about the legacy of the Monkees, both the TV show he and partner Bert Schneider created in 1966, and the real-life group that emerged from the Hollywood sound stages for which it was assembled. "Davy Jones deserves a lot of credit, let me tell you," Rafelson, 79, said from his home outside Aspen, Colo. "He may not have lived as long as we wanted him to, but he survived about seven lifetimes, including being perhaps the biggest rock star of his time.” Rafelson corrected the oft-reported assumption that “The Monkees,” focusing on the antics of four likable rock musicians, was inspired by the Beatles' hit film “A Hard Day’s Night.” PHOTOS: Davy Jones | 1945-2012 “This was a show I had written six years before the Beatles existed, and the pilot was based on my own life as an itinerant musician when I was 17 years old,” Rafelson said. “What the Beatles did was to create a kind of permission for any rock ‘n’ roll to be a popular subject for television.” In auditioning 437 actors and musicians for the four spots in the band, Rafelson said there had been no prerequisite that any of them would be British. “It was his talent and his incredible charm” that landed Jones the role as the group’s heartthrob. “He went through the same audition process many of the others did, and that meant about 15 screen tests. David made that cut and, of course, survived after that as well.” It did help, however, that Jones had begun developing a public profile before the show started shooting. “David was one of the few anybody recognized,” Rafelson said. “Somebody in the family of one of the producers had seen him perform as the Artful Dodger” in the early 1960s Broadway production of the musical “Oliver!” Even though a real band, the Lovin’ Spoonful, was among those that showed up to the auditions, Rafelson said that musical credibility wasn’t the only factor. “We were much more interested in putting the band together according to what we thought would make a good television group,” he said. “Just because somebody had a hit record out doesn’t mean they’re going to be either a good TV actor or that they would blend well on the screen. We quickly got past that idea. But we were flattered that people who had such extraordinary reputations as the Spoonful wanted to do the show.” As for what landed Jones one of the four spots in the group, Rafelson said, “Davy was sort of a legit showbiz guy more than he was a rock ‘n’ roll kind of singer. I wasn’t sure he’d be able to switch, both in terms of the performance as an actor and the sensibility needed as a singer--or even if he would truly want to. He had his thing going as a Broadway and London stage performer. "But as soon as we started working together, everything changed. I just thought he would blend well with Micky and Mike and Peter," he added, referring to Monkees bandmates Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork. “David had certain qualities just sitting in a room that I was interested in,” he said. “He was witty, his goals in life were not to be a show-business star. He was a jockey at this point, and he returned to being a jockey before he resumed his show business career. That interested me." Rafelson also directed and co-produced the Monkees' 1968 film, “Head,” his first movie. It was a commercial failure and maligned by many who saw it originally, but years later it began garnering a new appreciation for its surrealistic style and anti-corporate attitude. “It was outside of its time,” Rafelson said with a laugh. “I just showed it for the first time in a very long time, in Boston, and the picture is now being fanatically re-reviewed. Everybody wants their first-born to succeed, and of all my pictures, I think that’s the one that was the most neglected until the box set” that includes the film, he said, a reference to "America Lost and Found: The BBS Story," released in 2010. “In some ways, my attitude was always very paternalistic toward the Monkees,” he said. “Davy got tired of being called of a band created by the establishment, which is indeed the subject of ‘Head’: what it was like to be used and misused, to be cavalierly treated. That’s why I made the movie. So I always had this paternalistic attitude about the Monkees and their having been my creation,” Rafelson said. “At the same time, I felt very fraternal about them because of the similarity of our ages. We used to hang out quite a bit together socially. When the Monkees were done--after we were done with ‘Head,’ and after some of them decided to break up--we continued to see one another.” Today, Rafelson said, many people don’t realize how big the Monkees phenomenon was. “This was a massive thing,” he said. “They sold something like 23 million records in 1966—and that was more than the Beatles, more than the [Rolling] Stones that year. They had more No. 1 hits. I tell this to people now, and they say ‘What are you talking about?’ But [‘The Monkees’] was hugely rewarding and I take great pride in it."
