3. (Jay-Z performs "Hard Knock Life" at Carnegie Hall) By Sowmya Krishnamurthy Jay-Z does everything big; even poached eggs and mimosas. The rap honcho is hosting his annual Roc Nation Grammys brunch this Saturday in what will undoubtedly be one of Grammy weekend's most anticipated and exclusive soirees. Set at the swanky, members-only Soho House in West Hollywood, Hov will host an anticipated array of famous faces from music, Hollywood and general awesomeness including Rihanna, Katy Perry, J. Cole, Ryan Seacrest, Rashida Jones and LA Reid. According to the LA Times, "The menu will include passed smoked salmon on brioche and Kobe short rib sliders, mini parfaits, a crepe station, and two bars — one omelet, one booze." Start salivating now. An A-list lineup of DJs like Samantha Ronson will spin for invitees so expect "Niggas In Paris" to be spun back more than once. Last year's Roc Nation fete was co-hosted along with Gucci's creative director, Frida Giannini, celebrating the art of music and the special-edition collection of Gucci Grammy watches and jewelry items. "I was looking for a partner, a very strong one, the day before the Grammys," Giannini explained of her decision to pair up Hov "I think Jay-Z is the boss of this industry. He is a very iconic person, and I think he is the best. So as a designer, I always say I find an incredible inspiration coming from musicians who are in the music industry. Fashion and music, they have always been together because I think we are looking to musicians and musicians are looking to fashion." Multi-genre Grammy nominees, performers and presenters like Rihanna, Kings of Leon and Sean Garrett rubbed elbows with actors Ryan Phillippe, Adrien Brody and Ellen Pompeo while Mark Ronson, Samantha Ronson, Solange and D-Nice entertained at the DJ booth. 4. (Fans predict 2012 Grammy winners) By Uptin Saiidi (@uptin) As the 2012 Grammys approach and nominees prep for the big night, winner predictions are heating up amongst artist’s biggest fans. MTV News ventured into Times Square to get thoughts on everything from Best New Artist to Best Rap Song. The biggest anticipation centered around Jay-Z, Chris Brown, and Adele. Nicki Minaj Raps With LL Cool J In Grammys Promo For Best Rap Song, most fans MTV News spoke to were torn between "Otis" and "Look At Me Now." "I would like to see Jay-Z “Otis” win," Anisa Fraser, 18 said, before being interrupted by her friend, Analy Miranda, also 18. "No, no Chris Brown all the way, "Look At Me Now," should win best rap song." Best new artist had fans torn mostly between J. Cole and Nicki Minaj. "I really want to see Nicki Minaj take it home, ever since she's been with young money and Lil Wayne and all those guys, and now she's got "Super Bass" out there, and she performed at the Super Bowl," said Justin Dllacort, 20. But winning Best New Artist isn't exactly a win in everyone's eyes. "I really like Bon Iver but I think that Best New Artist is a curse, so I'd rather it see go to someone i don’t like as much," Maureen Kelley, 26, said. 2012 Grammy Nominations: Did Kanye West Get Snubbed For Album Of The Year? What we found most is how diverse people's favorites are this year. When asked which artist should take home the most awards this year, 20-year-old Chris Deprima said, "Adele. She is a great artist, she's got a lot of great songs. I'm also a Jay-Z fan though, so I'd give it to Jay just because I'm a Jay-Z fan." He said before closing with a shout-out to Jay-Z and Blue Ivy Carter. View the full article
 5. By Raynold D Fabre-Jeune On Wednesday (February 8 ) 50 Cent flew solo to Somalia to see firsthand the affects of famine. "Children going hungry everyday, even dying everyday from hunger. I am going to keep sending images from out here. I need you to take these photos and re-post to your friends. The world needs to see what is going on,” 50 said on Facebook. For over 60 years, Somalia has suffered from various forms of famine, caused by droughts, poor harvest and infectious deceases. The threat of famine may increase rapidly over the next two months and after seeing this, 50 agreed to team up with the World Food Program to provide 1 billion meals for starving individuals throughout the country. The threat has also caused tens of thousands of women and children to flee the country. 50 Cent revealed that he was going take 10 cents from every “Street King” energy drink he sold and donate it towards the WFP’s campaign to end hunger in Somalia. The British Government estimated that 50,000 to 100,000 people have died in the past year from the country’s strife, and 50 is on a mission to show the world the devastation that is occurring throughout the week. "So I just got back from somalia it was crazy out there. I have never seen anything like it. I'm going to feed a billion people [with] Street King," 50 tweeted when he returned to NYC on Friday. 7. By Nadeska Alexis At the end of January, Roc Nation confirmed that J. Cole was set to film a video for his single "Nobody’s Perfect,” with Missy Elliott and the two stars linked up in Los Angeles on Thursday (February 9) to put things in motion. The Colin Tiley-directed video will be the fourth clip released from the North Carolina rapper’s debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story (following “Work Out,” “Lost Ones” and “Can’t Get Enough.”) Timbaland, Missy Elliott Releasing Albums In June Photos from the video shoot surfaced on Friday, showing Missy Elliott decked out in a studded black leather jacket and full makeup. She clearly enjoyed her work on the set, tweeting to J. Cole, “@JColeNC Thank u 4 having me @ ya video! Means a lot and I had lots of fun!!! Thank u again!” J. Cole, ever gracious, responded with “@MissyElliott you the Queen! You blessed me tonight! Thank you.” Missy Elliott hasn’t released a project since 2005's The Cookbook, but Timbaland recently told MTV News that both he and Elliott would be dropping new solo projects this summer. "Me and Missy are both coming with our albums at the same time, and it will be in June," Timbo said from his home in Miami last week. Last year Missy shot down rumors that her battle with Graves’ disease had hindered her work, and Timbaland assured us that their comeback was in full swing. "I just don't want to move too ahead of her and she don't want to move too ahead of me," Timbaland added. "So we're both doing it at the same time." 19. By Raynold D Fabre-Jeune It’s been almost a year since his untimely death and the estate of Nate Dogg (born, Nathaniel Dwayne Hale) is still facing large amounts of medical expenses from the treatment he received from CareMeridian in Orange County, California. After his second stroke in 2008, the G-Funk rapper moved into the facility and eventually racked up $293,512.52 in debt. Due to the large expense, Nate was relinquished from the center, leaving the artist to fend for himself in his struggle for health. The facility is now suing Nate Dogg’s estate even after David Michery (Nate’s manager) promised he would make the payments. “None of Nate’s so-called rapper friends cared to help out following his death,” Michery says. “I was the only person who would come forward because I didn’t want him to die. Me and Nate have 20 years history together and I did what everyone should have done and tried to save his life and not let him get kicked out in the streets and die…I just wish that the people he looked out for all these years and the people who claim to love him so much would help out.” To pay for the medical expenses, Michery plans on releasing previously unheard songs recorded by Nate, no date has been set for this release. Nate Dogg passed away at the age of 41 on March 15, 2011 due to complications from a stroke, which reports say led to heart failure. 23. Chris Brown has been under the watchful eye of the law since his assault against Rihanna in 2009, and though he's complied with court demands since then, he still not completely free to do as he pleases. During a a status hearing in a Log Angeles court on Thursday (February 9), a judge ruled that Brown must still remain the under the supervision of a probation officer. Chris Brown Returns To Grammys As A Performerg> In a status hearing on Thursday in Los Angeles, a judge said that Chris Brown is doing a good job complying with the terms of his sentence for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009, but that he must remain under the supervision of a probation officer for the time being. According to the Associated Press, Brown was not in court for the hearing where his attorney asked that the singer's supervised probation end thanks to his good behavior. Superior Court judge George Lomeli, however, agreed with prosecutors, who argued that even with Brown's good marks to date, he should keep reporting to a probation officer in his home state, Virginia. Brown's attorney, Mark Geragos, attempted to end the probation, which is part of the sentence Brown received in June 2009 when he agreed to a plea deal
in which he plead guilty to one count of felony assault and was sentenced to 180 days of community labor and five years of probation. Geragos pointed to a probation report that said that Brown had been truthful with officers, passed all required drug tests and "has made great strides" while under probation. To date, Brown has completed half of the six months of roadside cleanup, graffiti removal and other manual labor he was ordered to do under the terms of the deal. But the AP reported that Lomeli didn't think it was unreasonable for Brown to say under supervision while he finishes the rest of his community service hours. The singer has already completed anger management and domestic violence counseling and a different judge in the case agreed last year to relax a restraining order that barred Brown and Rihanna from contacting each other or getting too close to one another at music industry events. The hearing came just days before Brown and Rihanna are slated to return to the Grammy stage
for the first time since the February 2009 assault. In advance, tongues have already begun wagging, with rumors flying last month that the exes have reunited recently and have been spending time together again. 25. If one movie a night is never enough for you and you're looking for a flick to get you in the mood for this week's new release, Double Feature Friday is here to help. This new weekly column takes a look at the week's releases and pairs them with a complimentary film to watch before, after or as a substitution. "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in 3D" & "Serenity" The connection between these two goes deeper than their deep space setting. Joss Whedon filled the big-screen continuation of his television space opera, "Firefly," with the fun and swagger of their original "Star Wars" trilogy, while creating a vision that was entirely his own. Sure, Mal burrows from Han, but that doesn't make Nathan Fillion an ounce less likable or cool. You could easily argue that "Firefly" and "Serenity" were more earnest continuations of the space opera/western combo-genre that Lucas established with "Star Wars" back in 1977. "Serenity" can stand on its own, but watching "Firefly" beforehand will increase your enjoyment exponentially. Also, 2D. "Safe House" & "Green Zone" Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass' post-Bourne collaboration fell victim at the box office to "Alice and Wonderland," quickly and unjustly fading from the conversation. "Green Zone" meets the standard set by the duo's previous work together and takes on a more contemporary edge with its "ripped from the headlines" story about WMDs. As with "Safe House," Damon's character must go against the wishes of his commanding officers—one of whom is also played by Brendan Gleeson—to find out the truth behind the government's misdealing. "The Vow" & "Memento" What better way to journey across the memory loss spectrum than with Christopher Nolan's sophomore effort before diving into its polar opposite! Instead of Rachel McAdams desperately trying to piece together the relationship she's lost with the help of Channing Tatum, you get Guy Pearce desperately trying to piece together the relationship he's lost with the help of body tattoos and Joe Pantoliano. Plus, there's no better time to check out the movie that made the man before "The Dark Knight Rises" comes out in July. "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" & "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore" Listen, there are only so many reasons you would get up to go see "Journey 2." It may be because of your love of Dwayne Johnson, but I'm guessing there's probably a deep seeded irony/curiosity. If that's your poison, I recommend director Brad Peyton's previous directorial effort, the sequel to 2001's "Cats & Dogs." Before you scoff, read a sample of the cast: Academy Award nominees Nick Nolte and Bette Midler, J.K. Simmons, Neil Patrick Harris, James Marsden, and James Bond himself, Roger Moore. It is by no means a good film, but shouldn't matter too much to you. "Rampart" & "The Shield" When FX initially ran promos for the gritty cop drama starring Michael Chiklis, it went by the name of "Rampart." The shared name comes from the real-life Rampart Division scandal in the LAPD during the 1990s. If you weren't able to catch the series back when it originally aired, "The Shield" remains a series worth watching, as it launched the careers of many of today's top TV talents, like Walton Goggins from "Justified."
