1. Hi again Beat King people, We have another huge night lined up for our new monthly resident at XOYO! Dj Kentaro is a beast. Watching him scratch while listening to what sounds he makes defies one’s sense of reality and logic; how can he create these sounds with just a pair of decks? How can his hands move quite that quickly? And where the hell are his headphones? Yes, Kentaro is a mad dexterous surgeon who slices and dices beats into a breathtaking sonic concoction in his Sendai laboratory and at events all over the world. When Kentaro is behind a set of 1200s and a mixer, things go off. His shy demeanor betrays a true master at work… the true master at work. Following victory as Asia’s first World DMC champion in 2002 with on of the highest recorded scores he has gone on to conquer the world with appearances on almost every cover of every hip-hop magazine in print and a string of highly acclaimed LPs and mix-tapes on Ninja Tune. Dj Kentaro is something else. See it to believe it. Smerins Anti-Social Club are a nine piece multi-genre band from Bristol. Back in their home town the expectation they raise is such it’s practically impossible to get into one of their gigs. And thanks to touring the biggest festivals in the UK they are now steadily making a name for themselves nationwide as one of the most vibrant and exciting bands around. Watch out for their single “Dr Who” on Tru Thoughts records later this year, a dub/reggae version of the TV theme tune of the same name with Tenor Fly on vocals, setto be the track of the summer. And we really mean that. In support the always reliable, always on form, always on time… the one and only Mr Thing, (aka the best party hip hop dj in the UK aka the good one from the Scratch Perverts). 2. Hey there Beat King people, Now for a limited period of 2 weeks only, you can purchase a special 2 person ticket for only £25! This ticket guarantees entry for two people and is a great earlybird deal! CLICK HERE FOR LIMITED 2 PERSON TICKETS When Gonjasufi arrived for his first ever live London show last year we asked him if it would sound like the album: “No” he said, “I need to change, it drives me crazy if I don’t, I get restless”. He wasn’t messing about: expecting a lo-fi electronic affair of some kind we were confronted with a full on punk-rock-meets-dubbed-out-hip-hop assault to the senses with Sumach’s wails and croons riding the whole thing like some kind of crazed spirit. With all the psyched-rock improvisation, the incense waving and some very peculiar on stage antiques at times it was hard to be sure if you were not actually tripping your nuts off for real. It was as intense as it was good and we cannot wait to see him again for his show at XOYO on May 5th. Whatever it is, it will be pretty special. See you There!
3. Ghostpoet plays live on stage at 9:30pm, followed by a Soundcrash club night special with line-up tba. 4. Hi Beat king people, On 5th May, Soundcrash proudly presents one of the most mystifying voices on Warp Records, playing with his full band. When Gonjasufi arrived for his first ever live London show last year we asked him if it would sound like the album: “No” he said, “I need to change, it drives me crazy if I don’t, I get restless”. 5. Hi Beat King heads, The one and only Luke Vibert returns to the fray under his most celebrated and wondrous moniker, Wagon Christ (to clarify, he is not under a wagon. Nor on one. Nor is he, strictly speaking, Christ, though we can’t rule out his messianic status). The king of stoned exotica, ridiculous vocal samples, toothsome puns, swinging rhythm and the psychedelic groove, Vibert has never been one to take himself too seriously, but his music continues to delight. His new album, “Toomorrow”, out on Ninja Tune records on March 14th is a case in point. Built around a dizzying array of vocal samples – by turn funny, vacuous, pointed and occasionally threatening – the album spins out in a hundred and one directions whilst always being recognisably a Wagon Christ production. Tonight Wagon Christ plays live to mark the launch of “Toomorrow”, and you don’t want to miss is, even if we say so ourselves. Which we do. Support comes from: dÉbruit (full live band) Ceephax Infesticons (live – on stage 10pm) Young Montana? Room 2: I Love Acid vs Keep up! Tickets are flying out for this one so grab them HERE. 6. Hey Beat King heads, Following their amazing sold-out performance at the Islington Academy in March we’ve been looking forward to arranging another bout of the glorious, long, dreamy phsychedelic compositions of this band ever since and the chance has finally arisen! But just what is Jaga Jazzist? Jaga Jazzist is a restless soul, going in many directions at the same time, but always moving forward quickly and sure-footedly; a band bent on pushing boundaries, both personal and musical, rendering it almost impossible to categorize; a collection of eclectic minds, instruments and musical ideologies with shared goals; therein lies the very special uniqueness of this musical tour de force. They are just Jaga Jazzist. And this is what they must be. With ten highly proficient musicians come ten different views on the music, and these eclectic origins are palpable in both the recordings and the live shows. Having been described as ‘The Norwegian Cinematic Orchestra’ (though somewhat unfairly as the Jazzists are 5 years their senior) since their 2001 signing to Ninja Tune they have toured extensively, playing jazz festivals and electronica shows alike, always amazing their audiences with the depth of music and skilled musicianship, so they are now renowned as “one of the best live bands on Ninja Tune”, an extremely high accolade in anybody’s books considering the company they are in! http://www.jagajazzist.com/ Tickets for this one are flying out so make sure you bag one soon! 9. Hi beatking people, Tomorrow night Gonjasufi will perform with a full live band for the first time in the UK at the Rhythm Factory!! There are only a few tickets left on sale for this one and it is set to be a huge night so bag them now to miss disappointment! Gonjasufi is the alias of the dreadlocked, dark-eyed, Mojave Desert-dwelling Sumach Ecks assumes for his current musical incarnation. It’s more accurate to describe him as a vocalist than a singer, as the sounds that he disgorges on his debut album, A Sufi and a Killer, travel rapidly from warbling notes to gravelly wails and dry-throaty cackles. The haggardly psychedelic and Eastern-influenced feel of Gonjasufi is layered and complex. Produced by the Gaslamp Killer, Mainframe, and his Warp Records label mate Flying Lotus, Gonjasufi’s music is an experience in and of itself, and tomorrow night we have the priviledge of listening to the full live band in the UK for the very first time. for further info & tickets check out the website: www.soundcrashmusic.com See you at the front!
