  2. Tortured Soul Bio In the space where electronica and live music collide and the boundaries between current and classic dance music blur, you'll find Tortured Soul. It's a new concept in the world of house music: no DJ's, no loops, no sequencers...Tortured Soul performs completely live. The instrumentation is simple and organic - drums, electric bass, vintage keys, and vocals - but the sound is thick with layers of heartfelt soul, danceable grooves, and infectious hooks. On stage and in the studio, Tortured Soul blends modern pop and dance music sensibilities with American R&B to create a sound evocative of Jamiroquai, Stevie Wonder, and St. Germain. As pioneers of a new genre of music - live soulful house - Tortured Soul has kept up a rigorous performance schedule for the past year and a half. Touring in support of the May 2004 release of their debut full-length album, "Introducing Tortured Soul" on Purpose Records, they've played hundreds of shows in dance clubs, live venues and festivals all over the US, Canada, and England. Their genre-bending sound has led them to share the stage with superstar DJ's and live acts alike, from Paul Oakenfold, Roni Size, Francois K, Miguel Migs and Felix Da Housecat, to John Mayer, Maroon 5, MMW, The Legendary Wailers, and The Brand New Heavies. In addition to their accomplished live musicianship, Tortured Soul's studio productions have been played and praised by such luminary DJ/Producers as Kaskade, Marques Wyatt and Roger Sanchez. Their tracks have been selected for nearly 20 house music compilations in the past years, including Stereo Sushi, Loveslapped Vol. 2, Afterdark - New York City (Kinkysweet Recordings), and Danny Krivit's In The House on Defected Records. Comprised of three members, Tortured Soul was originally conceived in May 2001 by drummer, singer, and songwriter John-Christian Urich. The first Tortured Soul single for Central Park Recordings was the now-classic house track "I Might Do Something Wrong" re-mixed by Osunlade. The track saw immediate and sustained success, playing regularly at New York's legendary Body & Soul party and landing TS a secure place in the record crates of thousands of DJ's worldwide. After a Tortured Soul collaboration with Alistair Colling, keyboardist Ethan White and bassist JKriv (Jason Kriveloff) joined Urich to create the eminently catchy and heartfelt song "Fall In Love," co-produced by DJ Spinna. By their fourth single, "How's Your Life," Tortured Soul's intuitive musical rapport was fully realized, defining a chunky soul-house sound with haunting and inspiring vocals. Each of the three members of Tortured Soul is a skilled musician, songwriter, and producer in his own right, combining over 30 years of musical experience. Urich, reared on classic disco and soul, has worked with such producers as Reggie Lucas (Madonna, Stephanie Mills) and Roger Sanchez. He's also known in the world of house and R&B as founder and leader of the band Cooly's Hot Box, whose acid jazz classic "Don't Throw My Love Around" was featured on the first Giant Step compilation on Polygram's London/Payday Records, and was sampled as the hook for Armand Van Helden's mega-hit "Funk Phenomena." JKriv also produces music as The Moves, a soulful house project with two EP's to date on Central Park Recordings, and the disco-tech group bgb, a mainstay on Steve Bug's German deep-house imprint Dessous Recordings. White rounds out the group, bringing a learned and seasoned style to the Tortured Soul sound - rhythmic and soulful, blending his background in jazz with Brazilian pop, African rhythms, and 70's R&B. Tortured Soul takes the dynamism of modern pop music and dance culture and tempers it with experienced musicianship to create their signature sound: energetic, infectious, live soulful house.
