  1. Fusing the complexity of British prog rock with an American heartland sound representative of their name, Kansas were among the most popular bands of the late '70s. The band continues to tour to this day, and their massive hit singles "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind" continue to be played in heavy rotation on classic rock radio. 3. The Guess Who was a Canadian rock music band from Winnipeg, Manitoba that was one of the first to establish a major successful following in their own country as well as abroad in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They were the first Canadian rock group to have a No.1 hit in the United States (“American Woman,” 1970). 5. The genre-defying Pimps of Joytime pay homage to funk, afrobeat, latin and hip hop, combining loops and live playing in a way that is seamless and infectious. The joyful noise you'll hear is a heady musical gumbo sure to get you moving. Their eclectic debut album "High Steppin'" is available now on Wonderwheel Recordings. Toronto based God Made Me Funky (GMMF) is a funky live ensemble, comprised of a diverse array of musicians ranging from a classically trained Jazz artist to street schooled Hip-Hop and RnB vocalists. With a common bond of moving crowds with their infectious energy, the band shares the passion of bringing the "Nu-Funk" sound into the next millennium. 8. No matter who you are, where you live, or your taste in music, Tower of Power will find you. And once that happens, it's all over. You will come to believe not only that soul music is the salvation of us all, but that Tower of Power is one of those rare bands who can claim to be the real deal, 100 proof, aged-to-perfection, ground zero Soul. And the thing is, they're everywhere now. My Interview with Emilio Castillo from Tower of Power: http://www.cincygroove.com/?q=node/630 Scott
  9. Grandmaster Caz is one of the pioneers of hip hop, plain and simple. Caz was the first DJ to rhyme and cut simultaneously, having started DJ-ing in 1974 after seeing DJ Kool Herc DJ at a party in the Bronx. As captain of the Cold Crush Bros., Caz led the crew to new heights. Together the crew fostered a style and sound that has inspired many of today most famous MCs, including KRS-1, Will Smith, Big Daddy Kane and Slick Rick. 10. Eric McFadden is an American guitarist, vocalist and songwriter from San Francisco Bay Area, California, at times described as "an authentic old-west troubadour and an absolutely wicked 6-string maestro." Reviews note McFadden's guitar virtuosity, distinctly melodic songwriting and "rich, deep" vocal tone. His recordings and performances are cross genre and his lyrics are often characteristically dark with an interest in the macabre side of life and love. 12. In many circles, Bernie Worrell needs no introduction. From his work as a founding member and Musical Director of Parliament-Funkadelic to his contributions to the Talking Heads, Worrell has been twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Indeed, songs such as “Burning Down the House” and “Flashlight” wouldn’t have been the same without him, and Worrell’s keyboard prowess has only grown since those classic recordings. As one of the most sampled musicians in history, Worrell’s funky licks have graced hit songs by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Ice Cube, En Vogue and more. My Interview with Bernie Worrell: http://www.cincygroove.com/?q=node/594 Scott name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355">
  13. Don't adjust your speakers. That is the legendary riff to Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" wailing on a tenor saxophone underneath the spitfire rhymes of Napoleon Maddox that you're hearing. And the old man getting the led out on the horn who looks one part Henry Threadgill and one part Grady Wilson is Jack Walker--a little known avant jazz sage from Lincoln Heights (a section of Cincinnati best known as the original stomping ground of the Isley Brothers). Together the unlikely pairing form ISWHAT?!, one of the most groundbreaking hip-hop groups to emerge from the Midwest in recent memory. 14. What a great 3 days of music in my hometown of Cincinnati, OH. The Midpoint Music Festival has become one of the best music festivals around. It takes a tremendous amount of effort to have over 150 bands playing over 3 days in 15 different venues. City Beat Magazine put together a great festival this year. A nice touch was the 20 Scion street cars that were running a loop during the festival to shuttle around patrons, it saved me a lot of walking. Here are photos I took of the following bands: Seabird, Daughters and Sons, Addie Loy, Megan King, Ill Poetic, Sonny Moorman, The Newbees, Jon Justice Band, IsWhat, Jayne Sachs, Seedy Seeds, Taini Asili, Tracy Walker, Troubadour Dali, Wussy, Yoshi, The Koala Fires, Bill Kurzenerger There is also video from most of the bands that were photographed, bands from 9.25 have been added with the rest being added soon! http://www.cincygroove.com/?q=node/588 Scott name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> "> name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> " type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355">
  15. Originally from Dayton, Ohio and now residing in his adopted hometown of Cincinnati, Ill Poetic got his start as one-half of the group Definition with his partner in rhyme Young Zone (a.k.a. Zone Ill). Toiling hard in the Midwest’s underground ranks, Ill Poetic is coming into his own as both on the mic and the boards with a growth and maturity that rivals that of hip-hop legends and the heartfelt soul of Stax and Motown classics past. 17. Renowned and revered the world over as one of the greatest saxophone players of all-time, David Sanborn is an artist whose music has inspired countless other musicians while creating a body of work that spans the genres of rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, pop and jazz. A naturally gifted performer, David has helped defined the saxophone’s modern sound while influencing a generation. 18. Backyard Tire Fire has released their new studio album, The Places We Lived, on August 26, 2008. It’s the first long-player by the Bloomington, Illinois-based band to be released on independent label Hyena Records. Distinguished by a rare combination of workingman authenticity and indie-rock eccentricity, The Places We Lived is defiantly contemporary in the face of its deep Midwestern roots. 20. Afrobeat cannot stand still. As the genre’s tempting sounds continue a resurgence across the globe, Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) remains true to its original vision of breathing the intensity of Chicago’s rich music scene into the infectious sounds of afrobeat. At each of its 100+ live performances a year, the group’s frenzied songs hit audiences with a big enough one-two punch to tirelessly knock them onto the dance floor time and time again. 21. Abigail Washburn a very talented singer and banjo player has assembled an all-star lineup that includes, Bela Fleck, Casey Driessen, and Ben Sollee, aslo known as the Sparrow Quartet. While the combination of 2 banjos, a fiddle and cello might seem like an odd combination, they have created a wonderful and unique sound all their own. 23. Patty is a rare combination of talents. Over her 10 CD history, she has honed a reputation as a “musician’s musician”, working with some of the brightest talents in American music. Long a favorite with critics, Patty is that unique level of artistic sophistication – one that her audiences have come to appreciate and her new fans will love. Patty Larkin has achieved a personal best with “Watch the Sky.” The ever evolving artist has continued to search for a new voice, a fresh palate.
