Listen/Download: https://soundcloud.com/woo-york/clr-podcast-304-woo-york It is Monday the 22nd of December 2014 and we have new guests for the very first time on the CLR Podcast. The Kiev-based duo Woo York has come a long way from being Ukraine capital’s local heroes to becoming an internationally recognized live act with their own signature sound. They are not only residents of legendary Glaswegian label Soma Records and head honchos of Planet Rhythm, they have also been delivering one dance floor killer after another since the start of their career back in 2009. Known for their energetic live acts, Woo York combine experimental, dance floor oriented and avant-garde elements into a highly improvisational musical flow with a strong hardware background. The entire music in this set is performed and improvised live during one of their recent gigs and contains two tracks from their upcoming debut 5 tracker EP on Life & Death called The Valley of Songs.

Acid Rain A2. Come Closer B1. Analogue Swamp B2. Strobe 1 Release date: 07.04.2014 (vinyl) While some of you might think of Planet Rhythm as one of those old labels from back in the day, it may not necessarily be the correct judgement. Not only is it a product of its past achievements, but it’s also pushing things forward in the present time, with Woo York being one of a few new artists emerging from the imprint’s recent catalogue. That said, 2014 starts with Ukrainian duo taking over Planet Rhythm headquarters as the label’s proprietors and getting in charge of all of its future development. First out of press is the duo’s own EP highlighting their shift towards brand new, hardware-driven studio setup. From abstract TB-303-ish structures of Acid Rain, through the building peaks of Analogue Swamp, a perfect example of stripping functional techno, to Come Closer’s uplifting trance-y melodies and the closing sequence of Strobe 1, this record is shaping up to be Woo York’s strongest release to date. Ukrainian based duo Woo York mark their second release on on Soma with yet more deep, dark underground vibes on the Smoke Signal EP. After the huge success generated from Ancient Light earlier last year it seemed natural to keep up with the duo's output and once again the pair have deliver two perfectly warped Techno bombs Title track Smoke Signal is a deep, evolving monster growing from resonating sub bass and cleverly crafted percussion. Woo York strip things back for this one as dark, brooding synths ping through stuttered and looping beats. A perfect dance floor tool. Cold Welding drops next, building from the depths out a hollowed out, distorted core leading slowly into a fierce, kicking loop. More stripped percussion keep the track flowing as ethereal atmospheres ebbs out in the background giving this track a much deeper edge than you would think. Woo York have crafted two excellent Techno tools, born from their amazing live sets. With even more material on the way from them they are fast becoming core artists of an ever-evolving Soma.

The next hour is the recording from when they performed live at NextSound Festival (an all-live acts and advanced music/arts festival) alongside Byetone from Raster-Noton, held at the underground Closer Club in their hometown of Kiev, Ukraine, last month. This live performance SaveFrom.net was one of its kind as it explores live sound arrangement and manipulation (100% improvised), which is the concept and setup they specialize at the moment, aspiring to take it even further. We are truly humbled by the opportunity of hosting these amazing and very talented guys on this special occasion and releasing this extremely organic and experimental live session. Production-wise, their Grad EP released mid-last year was received exceptionally well, which included superb remixes by Jeroen Search, Deepbass, and Ness (all past guests in this series). For this year, they already have a slew of 12" planned across Soma (first one coming out this month), Audio Assault, and Fullpanda. Aside from keeping themselves busy in the studio, they plan to continue performing their refined live-act while creating new sounds and textures. With this said, we hope you enjoy the following 55 minutes of mind-blowing, abstract, futuristic music as much as we do.

A landscapish and interesting journey which is well orchestrated and never dull. The opening track Sawcure is an intense voyage through sound, excisting out of syncopated synths and a smoothly progressing bassline. The sophomore bit is a little more ominous, deep and terse. The remainders of this cinematic plot are just as diverse and well brought. The sublime edits throughout the record make it even more interesting. Back in 1989 the sounds of House and Techno music took off there. He became a music collector and went to many now legendary parties and club events, which greatly influenced his future career. In september 1996 he released his first record under the name "agent cooper" (on the label "Raw Music") and shortly after his first single on Tresor as "Pacou". The following year 1997, Tresor released Pacou's first album "Symbolic Language", and he became a resident DJ at the club. The year 1998 marked a substantial progress in both DJ and production aspects of his career. He started playing around Europe, Japan and Australia, and changed over to fulltime work on music and performing as DJ. In 1998, Pacou founded his first own label "LL Records" to release some of his own material. A third LP "State of mind" was released in 2000, furthermore singles on the labels Djax, Konsequent, Music Man and others. Tour dates again ranged from Brasil to Australia. Tresor released another single "Last Man Standing" in February 2004 and a whole album "The Berlin Sessions" produced with Juan Atkins in 2005. His current project is the record label "Cache Records", started in 2005. So far Pacou have played in more than 30 countries, and the story will continue... spreading the good vibe. 11. Ukrainian techno: can sound as a strange mistake, but it's not! Mays started spinning back in 1998 and from that time has built his profile as one of the most respected DJs from the Eastern block. Being the resident of the famous Kazantip festival and the radio host for more than ten years, he is cited to be the techno DJ #1 in Ukraine. Yan Cook started his solo career in 2011 after a tryout period under Eigenes Rezept moniker. His recognizable sound helped him to grab attention of the international techno community in a very short period of time. Now Yan is growing even faster mixing dub techno with hard industrial sounds. Woo York is the Kievian duo performing only live techno sets using a bunch of drum-machines and controllers. They gained huge support from techno scene last year with their uncompromising and really unique sound filled with strange effects and straightforward grooves. Exploit is responsible for the vinyl breakthrough of the ukrainian sound. Back in the late 2000's his music was fast and pumping. Those were the times of his Odessa Soundfreaks project pushing the boundaries between melodic and hardgroove techno. Now when his sound has matured he discovers new horizons for his music combining deep house and detroit techno with sinister techno grooves. The Ukrainian techno heads gather all their experience and mix their visions on this unique collaborative EP. What we have got on the output is something unique called "Mutual Exceptions". Their music and sets have undergone constant evolution. From an outset marked by hard, rough and minimalist sounds, now they aim towards downtempo, minimal, detroit or electro, a shift which has taken them to pursuing solo projects which allow them to give free rein to all their influences.
