Major Political Changes in the USA

I recall some pollsters feeling the same way the last time we elected a President...Kerry looked like a winner on election eve and even in the exit polls. Then, when the votes were counted, that Kerry muscle wasn't there. As we watched the returns and posted on BK there was a growing realization that things weren't going as expected, and that the fix was on in Ohio. I don't take anything for granted this time. The opposition is extremely experienced in rigging the vote.

Obama has entered this race armed with lawyers. Just let them try and steal it this time ..

Obama Plans To Rebuild America's Infrastructure ... Will Create 2.5 Million Jobs

And from a press conference:

“As part of our economic recovery package, what you will see coming out of my administration right at the center,” he said, “is a strong set of new financial regulations, in which banks, ratings agencies, mortgage brokers, a whole bunch of folks start having to be much more accountable and behave much more responsibly.”

It's about time.

American Credit Card Companies Cut Back Lending ... For Ridiculous Reasons

Kevin Johnson, 29, sits in his Peachtree Street office. After returning from his honeymoon, American Express informed him it was lowering his credit limit.

Johnson was surprised, since he has a perfect payment history and a high credit score. And he was floored by one of the reasons American Express cited: It didn’t like where he shopped.

“Other customers who have used their card at establishments where you recently shopped have a poor repayment history with American Express,” the letter said. Johnson complained to American Express by phone and letter.

“That doesn’t have anything to do with whether I’m a paying customer or not,” he said in an interview.

The Obama Administration has opened the door to the prosecution of Bush Officials who were involved in making waterboarding and torture of the enemy an official policy. The news media is all over the story - if only they had done so way back when

Shep Smith of Fox News: “We are America! I don’t give a rat’s ass if it helps! We are America! We do not f*cking torture!”

Coming from a country with national health coverage, watching this debate is unbelievable.

The NHS is by no definition perfect, but the arguments against it are just ridiculous. America is already paying more than anyone else on healthcare, so what is the worst that could happen financially? If money is that a big an issue, I'm sure the US government could cut back military spending without threat to the country's status of 'most powerful'!

I don't see this as a debate about money. Surely looking after sick people who can't look after themselves is the most basic of human instincts?

One of the most shocking arguments I've heard is that there wont be enough doctors. That basically translates to, "there aren't enough doctors for everyone, so we will ration life based on your ability to pay for insurance". Sickening.

The only thing that makes this about money is that we know the politicians standing against it are on the payroll of healthcare companies.

Public health is no more going to turn America communist/fascist/royalist/socialist/etc. than public police or a public fire service.

Maybe I'm missing something.

If it makes the Americans fighting for this feel better, my grandparents have told me they had to go through the same battle to get the NHS. Keep fighting - your grandchildren will thank you!

Thank you for that. Here's the deal - the Health Insurance Industry has spent a billion dollars to insure that they will reap the benefits of such a bill - and they have doubled the ante by donating to politicians on both sides of the aisle. People are angry over the bailout, so they have hoodwinked these folks into believing that the government should not be funding another expensive program. Bottom line: middle class loses, insurance companies have a big win.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
