Pictures Outlive People

My ex and I went on for years
Traveled the world, became parents
For every occasion or event
She always had a camera
From Reykavik to Jakarta
She captured every moment
She left me stranded with the pictures
The night she took the baby and went

Pictures Outlive People
Photos survive when people are gone
After the loved ones have departed
Their images go on and on
Pictures Outlive People
Likenesses remain after they're dead
Weird snapshots outlast reality
Ghostly icons stuck in our heads

My mother died not long ago
She was an avid photographer
Kept her photo albums in a drawer
Now they're stored in my computer
Those pictures are not really us
Just depictions on a screen
Our time together as a family
Is now a lifeless memory

Weird snapshots outlast reality
Ghostly icons stuck in our heads

Now I wonder if
I remember people
Or just pictures
Of people

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
