PARIS One of the world's busier orchestras is the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, created in 1981 and re-created annually in auditions in which more than 100 musicians – ranging in age from 12 to 20 - are selected from more than 300 aspirants in the greater Bay area. This year's ensemble winds up its current foreign tour, its seventh, with a concert Thursday in Amsterdam's Concertgebouw.

The tour began July 1 in Vienna's Musikverein concert hall and reached Paris on July 7 for a concert before an almost full house at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. The program included Aaron Copland's "El salón México," Max Bruch's Violin Concerto in G minor, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 and a generous smattering of encores, conducted by Edwin Outwater, the orchestra's music director who is also resident conductor of the San Francisco Symphony.

Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
