An Allman Brothers Incident

Asterisks dotted each set of the Allman Brothers co-headlining stint with String Cheese Incident at Red Rocks Amphitheater this weekend. Emerging at the start of String Cheese Incident's Friday encore, Warren Haynes offered a few solos on "MLT," a track written by String Cheese keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth. Returning the favor later in that evening, Michael Kang made a pair of appearances during the Allman's closing spot, joining Hollingsworth and Seth Trucks for a run through "Southbound." Rob Barraco, who also performed with opening act Chris Robinson and New Earth Mud, remained busy as well, playing alongside Kang on "Franklin's Tower" and tickling the ivories during "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad."

Paying tribute to John Coltrane, The String Cheese Incident invited Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge and Marc Quinones onstage Saturday for a group jam on the horn player's "Impressions," with Haynes later filtering onstage for a take on the Neville Brothers' "Hey Pockey Way." The Allmans also augmented their set with a number of guest spots, including Chris Robinson, New Mud Earth guitarist Audley Freed and longtime harmonica player Thom Doucette, who showed up for "Good Morning Little School Girl."
