Jon Hiseman....

Jon Hiseman (born Philip John Hiseman, 21 June 1944, Woolwich, London) is an English drummer, recording engineer, record producer and music publisher.

In the mid-1960s Hiseman played in sessions such as the early Arthur Brown single, "Devil's Grip". In 1966 he replaced Ginger Baker in the Graham Bond Organisation and guested with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers the following year to record the album Bare Wires with that band. In 1968 he formed what has been critically claimed as the "seminal" jazz rock/progressive rock band, Colosseum. Colosseum disbanded in 1971, although Hiseman later formed Colosseum II with Don Airey and Gary Moore in 1975.

Between these two versions of Colosseum, Hiseman formed the band Tempest with Allan Holdsworth, Paul Williams and Colosseum bandmate Mark Clarke. Ollie Halsall joined the band temporarily making the band a quintet but Holdsworth left the group along with Williams, leaving Halsall to handle all guitar and vocal duties.

Hiseman has subsequently played in jazz groups, notably with his wife, saxophonist Barbara Thompson, with whom he has recorded and produced fifteen currently available albums. Andrew Lloyd Webber, searching for a "sound" for an album to feature his brother Julian on cello, stumbled upon Colosseum II by accident and imported the whole band into his "Variations" project. This was the start of a ten year relationship with Hiseman, whose drumming features on recordings, TV specials and musicals.

In 1982 Hiseman built what was at the time a state-of-the-art recording studio next to his home, and together with the compositional skills of Barbara Thompson produced many recordings for film and television soundtracks. Hiseman is a founding member of the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, a German-based "Band of Band Leaders".

In 1994, Hiseman reformed Colosseum after 23 years in the same lineup when it had last split. From that time, the band has been touring and it has released one live DVD and a several CDs.

Can't believe no one voted for Mitch Mitchell! He has to be one the most vastly underrated drummers in rock history...Hendrix referred to him as "my Elvin Jones" because Mitchell played in a jazz-fusion style, the drums akin to co-lead instrument in much the same way Jones played dueling lines with Coltrane...

And a dearth of "Math Rock" drummers in that poll -- Damon Che and the late great Jerry Fuchs deserve honorable mentions at least...

Che's first incarnation of Don Caballero was based on the idea of the drums as the lead instrument, and Jerry Fuchs (RIP), Maserati, Turing Machine, LCD Soundsytem, The Juan Maclean - Argument... Mr. Fuchs was just an insane two-armed machine...

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
