'Avatar' Sequels Won't All Film Back-To-Back

Apparently, rumors that James Cameron would be filming the next three "Avatar" films back-to-back were a bit premature.

In a new interview with The Courier Post, producer Jon Landau set the record straight about the upcoming movies that Cameron has been busy prepping over the past few months. We still could have three more "Avatar" movies, Landau explained, but they won't happen all at once.

“We [are] doing two back-to-back, but not a third," he said.

It was Showbiz 411 who originally reported that "Avatar 2," "3" and "4" would film back-to-back.

"[Sigourney Weaver[ goes right into a new Christopher Durang play for a short run at Lincoln Center," the story read. "Then she films 'Avatar' 2, 3, and 4 with James Cameron. That’s right: they’re making three sequels to the blue 3D phenom all at the same time."

That seemed like a lot of work to do up front, especially since we all know trilogies sell much better than four-film-long series in Hollywood. Cameron also had never confirmed that a fourth "Avatar" would actually be made. In an interview with The New York Times, Cameron made it seem like "Avatar 4" was still up in the air.

"[I'm] in the 'Avatar' business. Period. That's it. I'm making 'Avatar 2,' 'Avatar 3,' maybe 'Avatar 4,'" he said.

"Avatar 2" doesn't have a set release date, but we do know that it likely won't come out before 2015.

    • Wait, Burning Man is going online-only? What does that even look like?
You could have been forgiven for missing the announcement that actual physical Burning Man has been canceled for this year, if not next. Firstly, the nonprofit Burning Man organization, known affectionately to insiders as the Borg, posted it after 5 p.m. PT Friday. That, even in the COVID-19 era, is the traditional time to push out news when you don't want much media attention.
But secondly, you may have missed its cancellation because the Borg is being careful not to use the C-word. The announcement was neutrally titled "The Burning Man Multiverse in 2020." Even as it offers refunds to early ticket buyers, considers layoffs and other belt-tightening measures, and can't even commit to a physical event in 2021, the Borg is making lemonade by focusing on an online-only version of Black Rock City this coming August.    Read more...
